‘Rent’ back on at Calif. HS

(Newport Beach, California) Students at Corona del Mar High School will be allowed to stage a production of the play “Rent” after all.
Earlier this month drama advisor Ron Martin complained that principal Fal Asrani ordered him to drop “Rent” because of its gay characters.“Rent” tells the story of a group of struggling artists in New York City, several of whom are gay.
Asrani disputed Martin’s claim of censorship, saying she only asked to see the script.
Now in a statement released by the Newport-Mesa Unified School District Asrani said “I never had a problem with the play selected.”
“The selection of our drama productions is [Martin's] call. I just requested the opportunity to review the script before it was final. [The school] administration received parent concerns from a previous play and I wanted to be able to ensure my commitment to the concerned parents as well as show my support of the student production without any reservation,” the statement said.
Martin said he is grateful but the events leading up to statement remain a matter of dispute between him and Asrani.
According to Martin, Asrani was concerned about homosexuality and prostitution in the play and asked for a copy of the script. Martin said he told her that he was using an abridged school version of the play and there was no prostitution in it. He also says he told Asrani that he did not have a copy of the script. He said she then canceled the production.
Asrani says she asked for a copy of the play and that is a common practice, and she confirms Martin told her he did not yet have one. Still, Asrani maintains the decision to cancel the show was Martin’s.
When Martin went public accusing Asrani of censorship the story was featured prominently in both the mainstream and gay media as well as in blogs.
When the show appeared off Martin said he would stage the musical “You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown” but also ordered a rush copy of the high school version of “Rent.” When the “Rent” script arrived he gave it to Asrani.
The students’ production of “Rent” will go up in April.

i love that stupid people always come tio their sences when gay students get involved
Interesting….it sounds like both sides of this story are somewhat suspect of not quite ringing true.
It is all about taking “being gay” out of the closet, and insuring to the best of our abilities that todays youth will not grow up with the superstitions, lies, and phobias – really nothing but implanted mental illness created by religious groups living with a stone age mentality.
A hundred thousand, or even a million little steps will help prevent the pollution of the next generations souls by those who make me believe that ‘you can be reborn’, but unfortunately at the top of that list are a whole bunch of jr hitlers.
So, imagine whose name will be at the top of the ‘expendable’ list when the school district has to make staffing cuts because of budget shortfalls in the tight economy?
Good, I’d love to see it! Break a leg guys.
I was worried till I learn that their is an edited version for high schools. I would NOT let high school kids do the broadway version.
This will now be the most well attended high school drama production of the year.
It’s “his” call, but she wants to “be able to ensure my commitment [and] show my support of the student production without any reservations.”
Sounds to me like her girdle is too tight.
I believe Martin over Ashrani. time for me to move onto the next issue.
