Referendum to D.C.’s recognition of same-sex marriages rejected

(Washington, D.C.) Gay rights activists celebrated yesterday as the D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics rejected an attempted referendum on whether Washington should recognize same-sex marriages performed elsewhere, the Chicago Tribune reports.

The board upheld the decision made by the city council last month which allows same-sex marriages performed outside D.C. to be recognized within the nation’s capital. The board said the referendum is in violation of D.C.’s Human Rights Act, as it would cause discrimination based on sexual orientation.

“This is the ruling that we were expecting, but I’m still thrilled about it,” said Richard Rosendall of the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance. “This is a big step toward marriage equality here in D.C.”

    • bubbafrombama,

Sure. You keep thinking that despite the fact that he’s OPENLY said that he agrees that marriage should only be between a man and a woman. Despite the fact that he invited openly anti-gay Rick Warren to deliver a speech at his inauguration. Despite the fact that the Department of Justice (which he oversees as part of his administration) has recently compared gay marriages to incest, pedophilia, and bestiality types of relationships.

Oh, and let’s not forget when the prop 8 protests were going on and he went to Beverly Hills, and was confronted by protesters, who told him to keep his promises to the gay community. Instead of dealing with the situation in a mature and professional way, he instead decided to mock the GLBT community in the dinner by saying “What promise?”

So yeah. You keep worshiping your crazy, anti gay, unqualified, lying, pathetic excuse for a human being “president” while the rest of us keep fighting for equality.

    • I was in DC about 2 months ago and I have to say the activist were out in full storm promoting and collecting signatures. Your hard work paid off, congrats on another battle won!

    • Uh, bubba, you do realize, don’t you, that DOMA prevents the president from actually enacting any benefits for us. As a matter of fact, all the benefits this “historic” signing will come down to is moving expenses for the domestic partners of federal employees. And all we had to do to get this enormous concession was vote for the man and not expect him to fulfill any of his actual campaign promises, like the complete repealing of DOMA, or to repeal DADT.

By the way, have you read the legal arguments the DOJ has put forward? And, when you read that our relationships are on the same level as pedophiles and bestialists, remember, the Attorney General serves at the pleasure of the President of the United States, and briefs him on all action that the department will be taking. Therefore, Mr. Obama had final say on what was put before the court.

Pardon me if I don’t swoon over this bit of nothing he’s handing us. You can’t shit on me and then throw a tissue at me and expect me to be grateful.

    • T. Wolf and Morgan give us a break with your rhetoric. You sound nearly as spiteful as the right-wing extremists do in their condemnation of us. The reality is that Obama does support gay marriage, but he can’t just enact it without Congress doing so, and the current political landscape is NOT prepared on a national level to deal with this. Yes, it’s sad politics come into play, but that’s the reality of our system.

Here’s proof that Obama believes in us:
(story found on Google News and CNN’s website):

“President Obama will sign a memorandum Wednesday granting health care and other benefits to the same-sex partners of federal employees, two senior administration officials said.”

As for marriage, let the States continue to legalize it, and let the new Federal lawsuits work their way up. Eventually Congress will have to step in, either because it is time, or because a 5-4 ruling at the Supreme Court level just barely didn’t go our way.

    • Paul, STFU. You’re as idiotic as the previous two I mentioned.

Oh and Kris please go easy on T.Wolf. He/she might support Hillary or the long-cabin Republicans.

      I voted FOR HILLARY!!!!!!

OBAMA IS A CUNT THAT BANS OUR FREEDOM TO MARRY!!!!!!

If you look at his teeth it says “I hate gays, I wish they moved to Australia”.

    • Kris,

Because I’m not a republican. I’m a libertarian who just didn’t buy into Obama’s crap. John McCain was not my primary choice for the election either… He was simply the lesser of the two evils, in my opinion.

    • @ T.Wolf,

Why didn’t you say that you’re “damned proud to be republican too!”

  • Morgan Said: June 16th, 2009 at 8:25 pm
    • Obama like us gays only when it suits his political purposes. Otherwise we are an inconvenient nuisance to him.

  • T. Wolf Said: June 16th, 2009 at 7:16 pm
    • I wouldn’t count on it, George. Obama’s anti-gay, and quite blatantly so. He only courted gays for votes because the majority of the gay community was easily taken in by his lies about “change” and “hope”.

I’m sure glad I didn’t vote for him.

    • I hope president Obama is looking out of his window to realize Washington D.C. supports same-sex marriage recognition. Maybe Obama will WAKE THE HELL UP this time!
