Unfortunately, our system is designed to favor states rights to govern themselves, excepting violations of the US constitution, as they please. The founding fathers were very mistrustful of a strong federal government, seeing it as being too close to a monarchy. So, nationalized efforts in our country are eyed with suspicion (Big Brother meddling in local affairs, if you will), and it sometimes takes a *long* time to nationalize a movement or a policy (note the prolonged civil rights efforts in the fifties and sixties, and, in resistance, people claimed "states' rights!").

You are so right Jon. There should be one Federal system (a simple low tech system is fine) for voting with one set of rules. Our system is broken and needs to be fixed.

With all due respect to my American cousins, why is it so hard to get people to vote and more importantly, why so difficult to cast a vote. Shouldn't a Federal Election have a Federal Vote System in place. I realize things are different down south but simply put, a paper ballot, a number 2 pencil, X literally marking the spot. Done. I'll never understand the myriad of voting methods when the tried and true works best. Just my opinion. Good luck with the vote.
