Rate of rejected signatures opposing same-sex referendum in Washington increases

(Washington) The error rate of signatures for Referendum 71 in Washington has increased according to the secretary of state’s office. R-71 supporters are trying to do away with the state’s new same-sex domestic partnership law.

On Tuesday, 14.4 percent of the 5,815 signatures that had been checked were rejected. Out of 17,317 signatures that have been checked so far, 15,067 have been accepted.

“The error rate was the highest of any seen during the first three days of scrutiny,” said Dave Ammons, secretary of state spokesman.

According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, in total there have been “45 duplicate R-71 signatures, 150 no-match, 2,006 non-voters, and 49 where the state is checking for a signature.”

In order to get on the November ballot, R-17 supporters need 120,577 valid signatures. According to the Post-Intelligencer, 137,689 signatures have been turned in.

    • At this rate, it isn;t going to have enough signatures. :D

    • It would be hilarious if they can’t actually get it on the ballot because they fail at running a referendum campaign.

    • That math trend does put the Washington R-71 H8rs shy of their goal.

Roughly 1400 invalids in the first two days and more than 800 in the third day. Here’s hoping it’s borne out.

    • What is the deadline for the signatures to get on the ballot?

    • From another article I read over at the slop, they need to have an error margin below 14.4%, I think it was.

^You can see the article there, it’s got more info about what’s going on with the referendum. And it’s lulzy to say the LEAST.

If this thing does fall through and make it on the ballot, at least I’ll learn once and for all how my parents feel about it.

    • It’s amazing that to take away ones rights and to get to vote on it you only need 120,500 signatures for a state with 6.5 million people. What a sham.

    • Don’t ya’ll sign such referenda, petitions for the homophobes? I do, using a fictitious name! Let them think they’ve got the number of signatures they need then laugh as they fail.

    • IMPORTANT NOTE for if it ever gets on the ballot:

There is a difference between ‘yes’ when looking at the petition and voting concerning it!

The petition is gathering signatures to PUT THE CURRENT LAW UP FOR A VOTE.

By voting YES in the REFERENDUM you SUPPORT MAINTAINING THE DOMESTIC PARTNERSHIPS.

By voting NO you SUPPORT REPEALING THE LAW ENTIRELY.

    • So far I don’t see the hand of Tim Eyman, Washington’s fave wingnut. I won’t be surprised if he does materialize though. Hope this goes down in flames; failing that, hope WA voters have sense to stop it.

    • Drewski- Eyman only does it for money. He has no morals. And it would be only the west side of the state that would vote against it. The only place that conservatives, that I see, voting against it is where the gay rodeo has been.
