Priest apologizes for gay tattoo postings

(London) A Church of England priest has issued a public apology for writing in Web postings that gays should be forcibly tattooed with a sodomy warning.
“I did not intend to cause any upset but I realize that the remarks were injudicious and I have caused offence. I want to issue an apology,” the Rev Peter Mullen said Tuesday.“I did not intend to cause offence when I made some joking remarks about homosexuals,” the statement said.
“I was not actually meaning to criticize individual homosexual persons, but the promoters of gay culture. However, my remarks have caused offence and for this I am sorry and make a full and complete apology.”
Mullen, who is chaplain to the London Stock Exchange, came under fire Monday when the comments on his internet blog became public.
In the posting Mullen said the forced tattoos would be similar to warning placed on packages of cigarettes.
“Let us make it obligatory for homosexuals to have their backsides tattooed with the slogan ‘Sodomy can seriously damage your health’ their chins with ‘Fellatio kills.’
In another posting the 66-year old Mullen calls for gay pride parades – which he called “obscene” – to be outlawed.
In yet another he blasted poetically another Church of England priest, the Rev Martin Dudley, for blessing the civil partnership of two fellow clerics.
“The Bishop of London is in a high huff, Because Dr Dudley has married a puff; And not just one puff – he’s married another: Two priests, two puffs and either to other.”
Bishop of London the Rt Rev Richard Chartres has criticized Dudley for conducting the ceremony, but chastised Mullen for the blog postings.
Following a meeting with officials from Chartres office late Monday the blog postings were removed.

The reverend is obviously a religious notcase, we shouldn’t give him or any of them the airtime. We are now blessed with a Nazi Pope and the catholics are too dumb to do anything about it. Not surprised, their too dumb to quit the cult too.
The Church of England is no different…none of them are.
But I find the irony in a few posts too tempting. The conservatives defend an individual right to gun ownerships and the liberals fear that puts too many guns on the streets…yet we say here if the conservatives win we should take up arms! How’s that for some of their own medicine.
We’re fighting the wrong battle..against homphobia. We need to be fighting religion, the root cause.
Roger Ramjet …
Depends on the outcome of the election next month!
Apology not accepted.
Crime? Blame the gays. Over Population? Blame the gays. Corruption in politics? Blame the gays. Stock market collapse? Blame the gays. Hurricanes that destroy towns? Blame the gays…
Anyone else seeing a pattern here? Just because LGBT’s are not included in federal hate legislation here (and in Brittain) means it’s open season on all of us in the LGBT community.
While the ‘leaders’ rip us all off of our money and spirit, they point their fingers at us and call us the problem.
Is it time to form our own Militia yet????
“I did not intend to cause offence when I made some joking remarks about homosexuals.” How could anyone make such blatantly homophobic remarks and continue to insist it was a joke. Now, this I find humorous.
Sorry Rev Mullen still offended. I only consider accepting apologies that come from the heart, or at the least are sincere. Saying your sorry solely to lesson the heat your receiving for your original heinous insults doesn’t cut it.
Tattoo either I’m a Homophobic Hypocrite or I Lie Through My Teeth on your forehead and maybe then apology accepted.
Let him say what he wants to say, its good for us if all the preachers are nuts.
Almost as good as Mel Gibson’s apology to the Jewish community.
Yeee HAW … I can say anything I like, so long as I say I’m sorry a few days later. Either way, the message gets out!!!
this is like an apology from Adolph Eichman for the tattooed numbers on the inside forearms during the Holocaust…
apology NOT accepted…
Funny, I am never meaning to criticize individual catholics, but the promoters of the catholic belief system. This “apology” is a bunch of hogwash. The man is only issuing it because it is having unintended consequences for him. Apology NOT accepted. Next.
in regards to the rev. peter mullen, likening homosexuals being tattooed to warnings on cigarette packs is horrifying. his statement sounds more like nazi germany. forcing gay people wear the pink triangle or jews the blue star of david.
You mean he APOLOGIZED!?! But I already got my ‘Sodomy-warning’ tattoo! I had to buy all this antibiotic ointment for it! How could you do this to me, Rev. Mullen? How could you!?!
Although I’m not a great fan of Christopher Hitchens’ snobbish attitude, I think he’s right when he asserts that religious extremism becomes more attractive during economic crises. Everyone was content with Labour’s social reforms in the 1990s when times were good. But now that the money has stopped flowing, all of Britain is abuzz with complaints about “political correctness” and “lack of religious freedom” under this government. I don’t think that’s a mere coincidence.
“I was not actually meaning to criticize individual homosexual persons, but the promoters of gay culture.”
But… uh.. wouldn’t the “promoters of gay culture” BE “individual homosexual persons”? That apology is backwards and hollow and one big giant lie. How he thinks he can make a “save” on those remarks just by apologizing?
Sorry, but your apology rings hollow. You are not sorry you think the way you do, nor sorry you wrote the words. You are only sorry you were called to task for them. You are the problem, not the final solution.
Can ya FEEEEEL the love?
