@ Jacquemar/ Qb1--and the same could be said of Spain not so long ago, yet Spain has shown itself more socially progressive than Germany, France or the UK. This is likely to go to court in Strasbourg, and the women will probably win. The Portuguese court pretty much opened itself to being overturned--the Constitution isn't closed to gays getting married, but it doesn't compel performance of those marriages. If it's not prohibited, what reason is there for not allowing it? Portugal will have to argue that bit of sophistry before the Human Rights court, and Portugal doesn't have anything like the balls-out homophobia of Poland (or the Baltics). The Catholic Church did enough damage during the years of military dictatorship, so don't mistake the Church's influence of the Portuguese government for what you'd find in Italy (especially with that felon-in-waiting Berlusconi) or Poland.

I agree Jacqumar, was thinking the same thing. The Catholic church and conservatives have too much grip on the country.

Too bad for Portugal, I will be going back to Spain and other countries with FULL equality for visits instead.

LGBT couples in EU countries like Portugal need to bring a case to the EU Supreme Court for human rights inequality.
