The Socialist Party has introduced new legislation that would allow same-sex marriage.

Jose Socrates, the Prime Minister of Portugal, and leader of the ruling Socialist Party, has said making same-sex marriage legal is a key goal of his for 2009.

Apparently, the reason the Socialist Party voted against the 2008 legislation was two-fold. One, it was initiated by the smaller, left-wing parties and not them. Secondly, it would have prohibited adoption by same-sex couples. The Socialist Party believes that Gay & Lesbian couples should be allowed to both marry and adopt, but understand that it would be too much for the general public to digest at once.

So this bill would allow same-sex marriage, and leave the question of adoption up in the air for a couple of years.

I think this is a smart move by the Socialist Party of Portugal and we, the LGBT community, should support Portugal with our tourist dollars if they pass this.
