Pope’s planned UK visit already controversial

, 365gay.com

Although Pope Benedict XVI won’t arrive in the U.K. until September, he is already sparking controversy.

On Monday, the pontiff criticized the equality bill currently working its way through Parliament.

The pope said in a speech at the Vatican: “The effect of some of the legislation designed to achieve this goal [of equality] has been to impose unjust limitations on the freedom of religious communities to act in accordance with their beliefs. In some respects it actually violates the natural law upon which the equality of all human beings is grounded and by which it is guaranteed.”

His remarks are viewed as an attack on the portion of the equality bill that would force Catholic adoption agencies to consider same-sex couples as potential adoptive parents.

Stephen Hughes, a Catholic member of the European Parliament, spoke out Tuesday against the pope’s remarks.

“As a Catholic, I am appalled by the attitude of the Pope. Religious leaders should be trying to eradicate inequality, not perpetuate it,” said Hughes, CatholicCulture.com reported.

“Inequality is at the root of many social problems,” he said. “Instead of criticizing the UK’s plans to improve its legislation, the Pope should ensure that existing EU legislation is properly applied in the Vatican.”

    • MAN, I’d love to know what that hat and staff are worth!!!
And why does his hat have the star of david on it????
      Just curious…….
As for people outraged by the pope’s and the churche’s stance on gay rights?
Stop going to church if you don’t agree.
Eventually enough people will leave and they’ll be forced to change policy.
Let Pope Sidious rant all he wants.
Organized religion is going the way of the dinosaur and good riddance.

    • Oh, dear, Der Heiliger Vater has done it again. A man who wears purple during Lent, what amounts to dresses all year around and triple tiaras really doesn’t have the standing to comment on this subject. And as for – ahem – “natural law”, honestly, what could HE be talking about, since he and his institution have been in rabid opposition to nature for millenia? As a spiritually fabulous (TM) Religious Authority ourselves, we do try to be understanding and gentle with all the poor folks what just don’t know better – but willful ignorance from someone who should is very difficult to forgive, and impossible to forget.

    • Those that do not know this fact but the current Pope was actually in the Nazi youth movement as a child and then became a Nazi during WWII. Every time he opens his mouth he seems to paraspeak Hilter. I am wondering if there is proof somewhere that he was a Nazi war criminal that he was involved someway with the concertration camps and terrible things that happen in them.

    • Is there a list of gay popes and also hetero ones who had wives or girlfriends? Perhaps if laws allowed priests to marry altar boys or girls, la popessa would not object. Lots of rumors that he too is gay with Gorgeous George as his lover

    • Here we go again. The almighty Church has to stick it nose into places it has nothing to do with. Tell the Pope to shut up stay home. We are all HUMAN. WE all should have the same rights. If you can’t support that. Then shut up an sit down. The Church is no angle. So they have no right to judge anyone. Look at all the people they killed in the name of religon. It time for the World to understand we are not going away in the night. We are gay, we are proud, we ain’t going away.

    • The UK is a modern country and has no interested in papal-driven divisiveness between straight and gay and/or in papal bigotry toward its gay and lesbian citizenry.

And the Vatican City is a foreign entity with no right to interfere in the internal affairs of the UK.

While no country has the right to forbid its people their right to the enjoyment of their faiths, those faiths have no right to interfere with the rights of a people to live free of prejudice, bigotry and discrimination.

    • Of course, all this is going on to distract people from the priests installing the new confessionals… you know, the ones with the built in glory holes.

    • For those that say who cares, the dinosaur is dying, just look at California and Maine to be reminded of the power this cult has over our laws.

But I thought England was Anglican???? why would they spend all that money to protect him, shouldn’t he be going to Scotland or Ireland???

The brits should deny him security. Let the whackos try to tackle him as they always do if security is lax. Perhaps he’ll learn his brand of hate is not welcome.

of course I’m preaching to the choir here, but he really is confused about religious liberty. His cult gets PAID by the british government (and many states here in the US) to perform adoption services. So many people think they are charitable. They get awarded contracts to do these services. NO RELIGIOUS LIBERTY when executing government contracts, because religious liberty is just a nice way to say “official bigotry”.

He lies to play the victim. Stop taking government money and you can create your own rules (in Mass they just stopped doing adoptions..good riddance.)

    • And people wonder why the English Church broke with Rome. Many indoctrinated catholics will say it’s because Henry VIII wanted a divorce; it was because the English was fed up with papal interference in a continent where the Pope was the ultimate authority on all things.
Note to the nazi pope: But Out of Things That Don’t Concern You!!!!!!

    • SharonHaley: check your facts. Sure the UK does not have Same Sex Marriage, but Civil Partnerships. But within the United Kingdom, Civil Unions are entirely equal to heterosexual marriage and couples get all the benefits under the law. Truth be told, the Brits are far more tolerant and open minded than the United States. Case in point – civil partnerships (equal to marriage in every aspect), gays not only serving openly in the Armed Forces but marching in Gay Pride Parades – IN UNIFORM, and openly gay men and women elected to parliament. Heck – most of Europe is far more open-minded than the “land of the free.” The German Foreign minister is openly gay, as are the mayors of Berlin, Hamburg and Paris.

    • By “natural law,” the Poop means “God’s law.” He isn’t fooling anyone. By “equality” he means inequality. The only way anyone could possibly justify a position that is either homophobic or misogynistic is by reference to dogma.
