Poll: New Yorkers split on same-sex marriage

(Albany) The latest poll shows New Yorkers are split on whether to legalize same-sex marriage even as the state Legislature moves closer to the landmark action.

The Quinnipiac University poll finds 46 percent favor legalizing same-sex marriage, and 46 percent were opposed. In a 2004 poll, Quinnipiac found 55 percent of New Yorkers opposed same-sex marriage.

But the poll finds most New Yorkers _ 65 percent _ support civil unions that could provide most or all of the legal and property rights already given to married heterosexual couples.

The poll released Thursday comes two days after the Assembly approved the measure and sent it to the Senate.

Quinnipiac questioned 2,828 voters from May 5 through Monday. The poll has a margin of error of just under 2 percentage points.

    • Good to know. And equality isn’t a popularity contest… But we also need to tell our stories to change public opinion… That’s just how people seem to work.

    • Too bad we cant just quietly legalize gay marriage everywhere. I doubt the conservative right would even notice initially (if the media would just shut their eyes and mouth for once), and when they do – they might be more shocked to see that its not harming a thing. In other words, they’re already swimming in ignorance so why not just apply the “what you don’t know wont hurt you” routine – Now everyone is happy. If anything, its a boost to any economy. Hey, I know it won’t happen, but I can wish…
Still, separate is not equal. Civil unions may provide the same rights but not the same dignity which no religious cronies ever have the right to take away – they don’t own it. Time to remind them that marriage is defined as a social institution and not a religious one. Their influence on voters is in gross violation of our nation’s constitution – I say their actions should be advertised as treasonous and warrants issued for several arrests. Oh well, keep boycotting for now…

    • Interesting that you didn’t include the data about which racial groups were supportive of, or against gay marriage. (Hint: Somewhat similiar to the Prop h* polls). I mean, James does need SOMETHING to lecture us about.

    • Chris,

YOU are making a charge of lecturing?!?! YOU?

      Now that’s funny.

      Be well.

      Sincerely,

      James

    • My dear, I could have set my stopwatch to your response. Even the wording.

You seem to forget one thing my dear, I don’t work at 365gay.com – you do. Our roles on here are inherently different.

But nice to see that your buttons are still so easily pushed and that you still can’t come up with a meatier response than your usual!

      Have a nice day!
      :)

    • Gee James, by now I would have thought you would have caught on. Obviously, I am intentionally a bit antagonistic with you. But for good reason.

Since you first started writing columns on 365gay.com – there has always been this, almost palpable sense, that what you really wanted to say and what you were actually saying were not in snyc – not at all. You weren’t lying or even being disingenuous – but you were certainly holding back your real passion – and that’s a shame. Sure, there are boundaries that even you must work within – but nonetheless, there is still far more room to express yourself more fully than you have.

By calling out a statement here or there, where what you really wanted to state never quite made it to the surface, you would reply – but often again, by glossing over.

No blogger is worth their salt if their point of view is so watered down, or even worse, predictable.

With enough exchanges and over time, you seem to be finding a clearer voice and yes, it is starting to get more interesting.

I only wrote one piece for 365gay.com, and although Jennifer and I e-mailed about my possibly writing more… upon reflection, I’m just not the kind of person who deals with being edited too well (even when its totally justifiable!) But I have the utmost respect for Jennifer and the boundaries she must work within.

As a blogger, you have a lot of breathing room… debating you point for point didn’t work, as you just dug your feet in deeper and adding more wax…(I think in an attempt to appear professional and/or even tempered – which, while understandable, doesn’t necessarily make for interesting blogs).

You have a platform, a lot of potential and a definite point of view – by being a tad provocative, I was hoping to get you to think about your postings and ask yourself “This is what I’ve written, but is this really what I feel?, is this really what I want to say? or am I just making this palatable for the sake of the format).

Now, you’ll no doubt think me arrogant for all this – so be it, (I’m used to it!) – but take it as “food for thought”…

      Have a nice day!
      :)

    • James, you really should rise above comments since you do work for 365gay.

But I will say that I would like a breakdown as well. Of everything from age to religion to race to location to education.

  • James Withers Said: May 14th, 2009 at 2:53 pm
    • LJ,

I was throwing back some humor to Chris. That’s all. As for the poll, I haven’t looked at the breakdown yet, so I can’t say anything.

      Chris,

That is a mouthful for a comment said in jest.

As for your theories about me and my writing, we will have to agree to disagree. Except for the arrogant part.

I’m kidding! Come on people. These are just jokes!

      Be well. Enjoy your day.

      Sincerely,

      James

    • I wasn’t expecting you to agree.

You’ve read it, it will stay in mind subconsciously nonetheless. Time will tell if your ego will allowing for better writing or not.

      Best,
      :)

    • Can someone explain to me the difference (other than the name) between “Civil Unions” and “Same-sex Marriage Equality”?

      I mean, really; it’s just a name!

“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet.”
      –William Shakespeare

I don’t understand why some people are okay with a civil union, but have heart palpatations when using the term marriage equality (same-sex marriage, gay marriage, whatever your fancy).

    • Ersatz-Chris W.: James, please be the kind of writer I want you to be — or else! By the way, the Martians have just invaded and we are all about to be incinerated — ala “Independence Day”. So, quick James, write something meaningful, dammit …while you still have a chance!

Ersatz-James W.: They’re my peeps, don‘t dis ‘em! You’re just jumping on the “let’s-dump-on-the-illegal-aliens” bandwagon. Have a nice day! Or rather, have a real “crispy” day, Chris! Bwahahahahaha!

      …Zzzzzzzzzzzzzap!!!!!

    • Wasn’t it New Jersey that discovered that it didn’t matter that their civil unions conveyed ALL the (State) rights of marriage? Companies who did business in more than one state refused to give same-sex benefits unless the couple was LEGALLY MARRIED, including using the “M-word.”

Also, what happens when the Federal DOMA finally falls? Will “civil unions” automatically be converted into “civil marriages”

    • And I always thought NY was a progressive state. Just think, Mass., CT., Maine, VT. and Iowa have more going for them than NY. Makes you wonder.
