Bush and co want absolute power to fill their stinking pocketbooks at the expense of the people.

And they and their republicans, including McCain, and that maniac Palin, use hatred, sometimes directly, sometimes subtly, against gay people to achieve their aims.

Look at what happened to Germany and the JEWS in the 1930s, and you will see parallels in how the govt Nazis and their corporate buddies got rich off greed and Arms sales, and ultimately gave us WWII and 50 Million deaths. The only thing missing in that scenario is they didn't have an active religious component. Here we have that, in the fundamentalist churches - especially the likes of Palins, who are absolutists, and really haters, though today that hate is for gays, not Jews. And don't let them say they love you. That comes with a big BUT - do it my way or else.

God save America from those creeps.

GWB was a straw that broke the camels back, IMO. There were two others I experienced directly.

Nixon thought he was king, and tried to make the presidents power absolute. He also used the office as a tool of intimidation and illegal spying, and got caught red-handed with it in the Democratic Watergate cookie jar; remember his resignation.

Reagan used his power illegally to counter all the "non-democratic" countries he could find. Remember the Iran and Contra affairs. He used money from drug sales to subsidize his plans to overthrow the governments of other countries. He wanted to spend them all into bankruptcy, and made the worst national debt up to his time. Daddy Bush made the debt worse, and GWB has outspent and them all, taking this country into the sights of financial ruin.

It seems, the Republicans want that absolute power at all costs. It is corrupting them absolutely.

Rather than "long standing skepticism of presidential power" I think this is a direct result of George W Bush severely dimming the American people's confidence in the office of president.
