(London) Followers of the Rev. Fred Phelps say they plan to demonstrate a production of the play “The Laramie Project” at a British college this week – the first foray by the Topeka Kansas church into the UK.
Phelps runs an organization called Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka and his followers regularly stage noisy protests against homosexuality throughout the US.Westboro’s members are made up mostly of Phelps’ relatives. Although it professes to be Baptist, it is not affiliated with any national Baptist group.
Westboro operates Web sites including GodHatesFags and GodHatesAmerica and has been described as a cult.
Phelps and the church first came to national attention when he organized a protest by his followers outside the 1998 funeral for Matthew Shepard.
“The Laramie Project” is based on the Shepard murder. It will be performed Friday night at the Central Studio arts venue at Queen Mary’s College.
The Phelps group announced its plan protest on its Web site under the headline “God Hates England; Your Queen Is A Whore.”
Ben Summerskill, chief executive of the British LGBT rights group Stonewall, called the threatened protest “distressing.”
“The Laramie Project is a very serious play about a young man who was beaten to death just because he was gay. To regard that as a cause for celebration will make a lot of people both gay and straight feel very uncomfortable,” he told The Telegraph.
The local Member of Parliament, Maria Miller (C), said that she has contacted the Home Secretary to see what action the Government may be considering. Under British law, hate groups may be banned from entering the country.
Miller cited Westboro’s “highly inflammatory language and behavior.”
“The most important thing is that a production that is trying to promote tolerance goes ahead and that’s what I’m focusing on achieving,” she told The Telegraph.
Westboro regularly pickets throughout the US, but often threatens demonstrations without showing up.
The group was a no-how at President Barrack Obama’s inauguration despite announcing it would protest. It said last year it would demonstrate in two Canadian provinces but when the government moved to block entry into Canada, was able only to sneak into one area.
Stop that lying – we were in Canada AND we looked Obama and all his family and all his Cabinet and every member of Congress and all past living presidents in the eye and more important, they looked at the words, to wit: God Hates Obama; Beast Obama (with a picture of his big mouth opened and the frog – the unclean spirit coming out of it); Antichrist Obama; Don’t Take Obama’s Mark; Unholy Trinity, and so much more – stop being lying brutes. You can easily confirm our presence on You Tube – every rebel in Doomed america has a camara and they film the pickets and the put the film on You Tube – so how is it that the fags in the UK are too lazy to find the confirmation?! I’m just askin . . .
At the end of the day – God hates you and you can’t change that by lying about us!

I, personally, will pledge money to English law enforcement to cover the expense of locking them all up and conducting psych evals. In fact, let’s pass the basket and all chip in… The homophobic fringe has been looking crazier and crazier year by year to the general public, which is it’s own reward, really, but it would be the cherry on my sundae if the Phelps clan were incarcerated indefinitely in a foreign country. Ah, perchance to dream…
Please someone over there shoot them all dead. I keep hoping some good ole boy redneck will kill them all here when they are protesting a soldier’s funeral, but for some reason no one has had the decency to do it.
Although you may feel a long shower is needed after reading anything about this waste of oxygen and his inbred family, we do need to keep informed about what they’re up to.
They are the extreme form of every other bigot out there.

MY question is: where are they getting the $$$ to fly to the UK (if indeed they are going to)? I have said for YEARS that they are funded by the “respectable” Religious Reich (Dobson, “Quackers” Wild-man, Sheldon, Perkins, Big Hairs For America, etc). There’s no WAY they could pay for all those hotel rooms and airline tickets and van rentals on the budget of a “church” as small as theirs. I think the “respectable” Religious Reich subsidizes their actions and then throws their robes over their heads and washes their hands, Pilate-like.

Perhaps G-D will strike them deaf, dumb and blind for the remainder of their days. There are no words for this bunch of….what do I call them? Again, there are no words…
UK should deport the group as soon as their plane lands. Don’t waste a pound or a pence on trying them for hate crimes, Just put them on the plane with letter from the UK government that any and all members of this group are permanently banned from the UK and subject to arrest next time they try to enter UK.
Phleps and his are a threat to the peace and order of the UK and they should be labeled a “terrorist group”.
And the Canadian government should also label them as a terrorist group. They should be forbidden entry there as well and if they try to re-enter Canada, they should be escorted out and threatened with arrest if they try yet again.
I have a novel idea – why doesn’t the media stop giving these people the attention they so desperately crave? Starting with our own gay news sites. They thrive on negative-attention and like petulent children, perhaps only NO attention will affect change.
