Pepsi Urged To Drop Gay Ties
05.07.2009 8:12pm EDT
(Dallas, Texas) A PepsiCo shareholder who describes himself as “a former gay” urged the company to “stop using shareholder profits to fund anti-heterosexual groups” at the firm’s annual shareholders meeting in Dallas.
Greg Quinlan, a member of the conservative American Family Associated affiliated group Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays & Gays, presented a motion asking stockholders to stop donating money to groups that he said ” aim to discredit the ex-gay community.”In his speech to shareholders, Quinlan described the Human Rights Campaign and Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) as “gay organizations that hate people like me.”
Over the past two years, Pepsi has given $500,000 to the Human Rights Campaign and $500,000 to PFLAG.
“By funding PFLAG, PepsiCo promotes fear and hostility against the ex-gay community and our supporters, and spreads lies about ex-gay organizations. Diversity does not mean funding one organization so that it can attack another,” said Quinlan.
His motion received five percent of the vote. Quinlan said he will keep pressing the issue at shareholders meetings. Under company rules, any vote receiving more than three percent remains active.
PepsiCo produces Frito-Lay snacks, Pepsi-Cola and Gatorade drinks, Tropicana juices, and Quaker foods.
The company already is under a boycott by the AFA.
The AFA in January issued an Action Alert to its more than two-million members, telling them to avoid Pepsi products.
“Pepsi refuses to give money to any pro-family organization that opposes the homosexual agenda. Plus, every homosexual organization we know of is overwhelmingly pro-abortion,” according to the Action Alert.
Previous AFA boycotts have had little impact on companies, although the group has had some success.
In October, it ended a boycott of McDonald’s after the fast-food giant agreed to end its support for the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. McDonald’s incurred the wrath of the AFA after it made a $20,000 donation to the chamber, and Richard Ellis, who until September was vice president of communications for the chain, was named to the chamber’s board of directors. Ellis resigned from the Chamber of Commerce board, though the company said Ellis resigned after moving to McDonald’s Canadian operation.
The AFA previously boycotted Disney for several years over its support for Gay Days at Disney World, although the company is not an official sponsor of the event. It has also boycotted Proctor & Gamble and Kraft, and has threatened to boycott Wal-Mart.
An AFA boycott of Ford over the automaker’s support for LGBT issues was heralded as a success by the organization, which noted that it had resulted in a drop in sales and share value. But most financial analysts said that Ford’s problems were really the result of vehicle designs that failed to impress the public. Ford was the only carmaker of the Detroit big three to decline a federal bailout.
The AFA claimed victory when Ford began pulling its ads from LGBT publications, but industry observers and the company said the ad pullout was part of a downsizing of expenses.

Oh, praise the f*kng lord, another gay ‘cured’
…wonder if his wife wears a strap-on ?
I will be one of tens of thousands attending Gay Days at Disney again this year. I might even purchase a Pepsi or two even though I don’t usually consume soft drinks. Disney must realize how much AFA contributes to their bottom line when they see all of those red shirts! I hope Pepsi also understands how much rational-thinking people appreciate their support of fairness and equality!
Does anybody else think it is time to bring back the idea of outing people?
The Krazy Kristian Kultists, on the head of Gods list for hell, know they are losing the battle, so their freakism gets ever wilder.
Just another Minister Ted Haggard.
Who claimed he was cured and then got caught again.
Call pepsi’s HQ at (914) 253-2000
This guy is either just a plant / fake within the cure you group, or a victim of the church’s guilt trips. Pepsi should make a special contribution to gay causes in his sick name.
And just wait till the truth comes out, or he commits suicide because of the conflict between his nature and his paranoid beliefs stuffed into his head through the power of hypnotic prayer
I’ll send this one to HRC etc.
Really people… five percent of the vote. Why do we care what ‘Greg’ has to say?? We have a crazy disposable income. Many companies try to court us as we RULE the consumable world. Greg is entitled to his opinion. So are we.
Don’t get me wrong… I’ve sent an email to Pepsi supporting their actions. That said, if we expect a stage that is open and devoid of bias… we should provide it. Lets talk about the issue… and not how much we hate or pity the speaker.

Why doesn’t Quinlan go and get fucked? That’s basically what he wants. A leopard can’t change it’s spots.
I think the Pepsi shareholder is the one who is hating himself and displacing his own sense of self-loathing on groups that could really support a core part of his sexual identity, as a human being. In all honesty, the Ex-Gay Momement is grounded in the lie that you can actually change a person’s innate sexuality. On one level, you can supress or deny a homosexual identity. Trust me, I work in the field as a Gay therapist. That is a little like dying your hear from brunette to blonde and saying you are now blond. At the roots, you will always be brunette. The coloring of your hair or the expression of your sexuality is nothing more or less than a lie. Denying your sexuality through conversion therapy is ineffective and can lead to mental health problems that can put your life at risk…major depression, anxiety, PTSD, and serious suicical ideations. No compotent or ethical therapist would ever support trying to change a person’s sexuality. PepsiCo has been choosing to support groups that valuen and embrace human diversity. Does valuing and embracing groups that support our diversity mean that they hate anyone? PepsiCo is making policy that is fair-minded, inclusive, and appreciative our our truth as human beings. When you support anything beyind the truth you are supporting something that can never have a positive outcome.
Don’t ya just love it. “Either your with us or against us” attitude. AFA, Go pound sand!

Actually, we don’t hate people like you. We feel pity for you, for the way you live your life under someone else’s definition of “life” and not your own, and we feel sorry for your having been brainwashed into believing that we hate you.
That being said, I hate the fact that you have decided to join the chorus about how we hate you. Congrats, you’re just as blind as you were before you came out of the closet the first time. We’ll still be here when you decide your current life isn’t working anymore. You’ll be welcome again.
Organizations do not hate people like Greg. They only hate his sin. Love the sinner, hate the sin! Why does he fight so hard against equality? Money?
Greg has a LONG history. Plenty of stories about him over the past several years.
“Don’t buy Pepsi, they support gays, and we all know gays kill babies.” Lol, scare fail.
I’m feeling mighty thirsty all of the sudden.
Persecutors just love to claim they are being persecuted. They say they are pro-family when they are actually anti-family, pro-marriage when they are really anti-marriage. For gay people that is. We have a lot of work to do to overcome the fear, lies, and stereotypes which portray gay people as a threat.
Note to self: buy more Pepsi.
Former gay usually just means backseat bjs, no? Married to a trophy for the world to see and on all fours behind closed doors???
Meanwhile, being someone who hasn’t had a sip of soda since the early 1990s, screw Pepsi. Screw all the soda that has been created for mass consumption but should be taken in MODERATION. Does anyone recall what moderation is?
Big business making enemies with gays is no new pratice, however, there is enough of us it seems silly that we can’t take these giants down. I guess it goes back to lack of moderation.
