(Washington) The Pentagon says it has no plans to repeal the don’t ask, don’t tell policy for gay troops.
Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell said Tuesday that the military’s top leaders have only had initial discussions with the White House about whether gay troops should be open about their sexuality.Under current rules, openly gay troops can be discharged from the U.S. military.
Morrell said the White House has not asked for the 1993 policy to be scrapped.
“I do not believe there are any plans under way in this building for some expected, but not articulated, anticipation that don’t ask-don’t tell will be repealed,” Morrell told reporters at the Pentagon.
President Barack Obama committed during the 2008 presidential campaign to moving to end the Clinton administration-era policy.
The 1993 law was enacted as a compromise between openly gay people serving in the armed forces and those opposed to gays in uniform.
Morrell said Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen both have discussed the issue with Obama.
“They’re aware of where the president wants to go on this issue, but I don’t think that there is any sense of any immediate developments in the offing on efforts to repeal don’t ask-don’t tell,” Morrell said.
We’re like some abused wife who believes the flowers and the 400th apology means he really, really means it and it really, really was absolutely the very last time he’ll hit her.
What I find amazing is that even during the campaign he went back on his word over and over and we were all so intent on not missing the moment he walked on water we failed to see it was only ankle deep.
Stop apologizing.
Obama’s father was a failure and his son suffered, so we end up screwed in the exchange.
I would suggest that our brothers and sisters in the military have responsibilities closer to home. Your skills could make ours safer in Manhatten, for example; they don’t have to be used for the benefit of our oppressors.
Sorry, I know we’ve been conditioned to loving our country, but what if that ideal turned into a nightmarish phantom before our eyes: yes, it has happened, over and over again, as we know.
Obama is the brand of the next 3 1/2 years; let’s think outside the box and consider our next alternative. If we wait we’ll be played again.
Let’s just take a look at Obama’s record so far:
* Obama now supports George W. Bush-style Military Tribunals for foreign war detainees (he was against them as candidate Obama).
* Obama has expanded (not limited) Bush-style warrantless wiretapping; adding special guarantees of government immunity and expanding his “special powers” (without Congressional Oversight) of the Executive Branch.
* Obama has stifled government investigations into Torture and the Human Rights Abuses of the former administration.
* Obama gives away hundreds of billions of tax-payer’s dollars to Wall Street, and then he just turns his back on the union workers who supported him in the Auto Industry.
* Obama allows his minions in Congress to conduct hearings on Heath Care Reform where they invite profit-driven vultures and profiteering extortionists from the Insurance Industry to sit at the front of the table when formulating Health Care Reform — while they simultaneously arrest and expel single-payer National Health Care advocates from the hearings.
* On civil rights, Obama has de-prioritized repeal of DADT which has destroyed the military careers of over twelve thousand loyal, patriot Americans (even as Candidate Obama campaigned to push Congress to overturn that odious Jim Crow-style affront to human dignity).
* Obama (and Pelosi/Reid) have expressed no interest whatsoever in overturning DOMA so that those of us who are legally married (or partnered under some other kind of quasi-marriage-like legal arrangement) can receive federal benefits — as Obama promised.
* Obama’s apologists say that he is too busy trying to save the nation and the economy and jobs — so, then why isn’t he pushing for job equality and protections (ENDA) for the tens of millions of GLBT citizens who do not have the same level of job protections as ninety percent of the population?
In the final analysis, the Democrats and, especially Obama, are NOT “The Change You Can Believe In“! As bigoted, odious and villainous as the Republican Party is, at least they are upfront about it. Whereas, the Democrats, along with their lying segregationist, bigoted demagogue, Barak Obama, are master deceivers who troll the GLBT community for money, political volunteers, and votes — only to slap us all in the face with either that tiresome mantra of “the time is not right” excuse or just an outright “get out of my face” avoidance of us after an election — that is, after they have exploited us repeatedly in order to grab political power.
The Democratic Party un-official line: “Hey, just because they took us to the prom, it doesn’t mean we have to dance with them — right?”
….Well, that is their attitude. And we are expected to gleefully accept that? But what do you expect when all we get from our fearless “leadership” in the GLBT community is to watch them smile and plead: “may-I-have-another-punch-the-gut-sir” and (while bending over to kiss the feet of their heterosexual overseers) “will-you-please-kick-us-in-the-ass-again-master“ ? The subservience from of our masochistic, fan-boy GLBT, Democratic fund-raising, political social clubs and toadies in Washington is sickening.
Fortunately, amongst the deluded millions of Obama sycophants who initially supported this dishonorable bigot, there are millions now who are finally starting to see the light.
It will be a third party ticket for me and my spouse next time — unless the Segregationists Democrats in Congress and the Bigot-in-Chief in the White House get the message. I am sure many millions in the GLBT community will also express a similar outrage at the ballot box. Maybe then “our friends” on Capital Hill, and in the White House, will finally get the message that when you barely win an election, with a desperately cobbled together coalition of minority voters, you don’t dare betray your constituents by ignoring their fundamental demands for equal rights after you are in office.
If things don’t change, and quickly, I’m ready to:

Yeah, Obama pretty much sucks so far when it comes down to gay rights. The gay agenda is a very important issue to me, but it’s not my number one. If by the end of his first term he has not come through for us then I believe that we should be outraged. However, with everything he has on his plate doesn’t anyone have any empathy towards his lack of taking a position forward? Do you really want him to interject himself in the middle of the most controversial issues rather than focus on the issues that effect everyone as a nation? Come on people, lets be reasonable. Everyone should know that Bill made the mistake and we ended up with a Republican House and Senate because of it… how would you like that?

Oh my goodness, who would have thought that President HomophObama would LIE to gay people for their votes and then once in office break every single promise he made?!?!?! I am shocked, shocked I tell you.
He was instrumental in the passage of Prop 8, he has NOT passed ENDA, despite an overwhelming Democratic majority in Congress. He has NOT eliminated DOMA despite our own progress in New England, Iowa and New York. He has NOT signed or submitted to congress(which a President can do) any meaningful legislation which would do anything positive for gay and lesbian Americans. HomophObama promised alot of things and has not delivered on a single issue, yet there are still droves of idiotic gay lemmings who still worship at his feet.
I am glad I voted for Cynthia McKinney(Green Party) over this bafoon in the White House. She might be crazy, she might zhazha capitol policemen, but she did support marriage equality and has been a tireless advocate on gay issues, even when she was a Georgia congresswoman.
I am hoping Gavin Newsom runs against HomophObama in 2012, so we can ship HomophObama back to Illinois so he can spend time in prison with his good buddy Blagoevich.

Will someone, please, ask these jerks what our problem is that was not experienced by Canada, Israel, England, and the other countries that permit gays in their military? Isnt’ that a rather simple question or am I missing something? And we are the only country who “CAIMS” to have liberty, equality, and justice as the foundation upon which this country was built. Yeah, and there will be pork in tree tops any day now.
I’m not sure how they plan to recind a policy that is codified by a law.
Clearly, the Pentagon cannot change a policy that is contrary to existing law.
Unless of course, Obama is planning to follow Bush’s example on following the law.
