Palin church promotes turning gays straight

(Anchorage, Alaska) Gov. Sarah Palin’s church is promoting a conference that promises to convert gays into heterosexuals through the power of prayer.
“You’ll be encouraged by the power of God’s love and His desire to transform the lives of those impacted by homosexuality,” according to the insert in the bulletin of the Wasilla Bible Church, where Palin has prayed for about six years.Palin’s conservative Christian views have energized that part of the GOP electorate, which was lukewarm to John McCain’s candidacy before he named her as his vice presidential choice. She is staunchly anti-abortion, opposing exceptions for rape and incest, and opposes gay marriage and spousal rights for gay couples.
Focus on the Family, a national Christian fundamentalist organization, is conducting the “Love Won Out” Conference in Anchorage, about 30 miles from Wasilla.
Palin, campaigning with McCain in the Midwest on Friday, has not publicly expressed a view on the so-called “pray away the gay” movement. Larry Kroon, senior pastor at Palin’s church, was not available to discuss the matter Friday, said a church worker who declined to give her name.
Gay activists in Alaska said Palin has not worked actively against their interests, but early in her administration she supported a bill to overrule a court decision to block state benefits for gay partners of public employees. At the time, less than one-half of 1 percent of state employees had applied for the benefits, which were ordered by a 2005 ruling by the Alaska Supreme Court.
Palin reversed her position and vetoed the bill after the state attorney general said it was unconstitutional. But her reluctant support didn’t win fans among Alaska’s gay population, said Scott Turner, a gay activist in Anchorage.
“Less than 1 percent of state employees would even apply for benefits, so why make a big deal out of such a small number?” he said.
“I think gay Republicans are going to run away” if Palin supports efforts like the prayers to convert gays, said Wayne Besen, founder of the New York-based Truth Wins Out, a gay rights advocacy group. Besen called on Palin to publicly express her views now that she’s a vice presidential nominee.
“People are looking at Sarah Palin as someone who might feasibly be in the White House,” he said.

The log cabin idiots (to be polite) are in total denial. When they endorsed McCain they lost any support they might have from the LGBT people. It is unbelievable they would stick their necks out like this. *IF* they think they are going to get anything out of this endorsement (outside of a reserved seat going to the gas chambers) they are in for a rude awakening.
So what do you expect from a right wing republican? It is no different than Obama church’s teachings(?). Only with them its hate the “sinner”.
Both politicians Obama and McCain (and their running mates) are less than desirable. The problem is that holding you nose and voting for Obama is like voting to let any advancement the LGBT community has made over the past few years it will be like going back to when we were second class citizens and since Obama want to have the US taxpayer subsidize his church it will be hate speech sanctified by the US government.
You can not convert someone’s sexual orientation anymore than you can so-call fix someone who has down-syndrome. Both have been proven to be genetically inherent. So you can suggestively or aggressively(depending on which group you are so called trying to rehabilitate) change behaviors so it appears that they are, what these huts jobs deem normal. However, the homosexual will still desire the same gender and the individual with down-syndrome, well you get the idea.
Someone mentioned , with tongue in cheek , that centers should be opened to rehabilitate religious bigots . Actually , I believe there are help groups that assist people who want to break away from the psychological slavery of faith based fundamentalism.
How sad. This is exactly why I stepped away from organized religion. It’s the cause of the hatred, bigotry in this world.
I wish to start a conversion therapy treatment center for religious zealots. I am sure that with patience and understanding, they can overcome their prejudice and become productive citizens once again. If all else fails, we can crucify them.
The good news is they most likely won’t gas us this time around. I am sure they would prefer to make us household slaves.

“Maybe we should pray for Palin’s grandchild to be born gay. Then she’d hopefully wake up.”
Didn’t work for Mr. Cheney after his grandchild was born (too early to tell if that child will be gay or str8), but a hardened heart remains a hardened heart, even against the interests of his own daughter.
Some “family” “values”, eh?
There appears to be no extremist nonsense that this woman is not into. Does the supposedly most powerful nation on earth really need another leader with the world view of a sardine and the intellect of a medicine ball.
ya this shows the real logic behind the republican party and this chika wants to run the country if McCain drops dead…I agree wit MAN IN Lexington SC….SO IT BEGINS
Figuers that the screaming Hetro bible thumpers would like nothing more than to whip us off the face of the earth. sounds like Hitler wanting to take out gays, jews and anyone who wasnt pure…if you go to Family Coalition web site there’s a template that goes to the McCain group; in that template you can say your for Same Sex Marriage and and it’ll be from the Family Coalition web site. Send McCain a template to day from GOD…lol
Maybe we should pray for Palin’s grandchild to be born gay. Then she’d hopefully wake up.
Gee, WHAT a surprise.
I hope for our sakes and for America’s sake that Obama realizes he’s really running against Sarah Palin. He needs to focus his attention on her and expose to the country just what a McCain/Palin ticket really means.
The Log Cabin Republicans seem like battered spouses in an abusive marriage who haven’t yet been able to leave thier unhealthy situation. They’ll keep excusing and justifying the abuser’s behavior. The GOP have certainly used GLBT folks as whipping boys and boogiemen. Why the Log Cabin organization even exists after the last presidential election mystifies me.
