Organizers cancel Serbia’s gay pride march

(Belgrade, Serbia) Organizers have canceled Serbia’s gay pride march after authorities said they could not guarantee protection for the event from extremist groups.

The gathering was to be Serbia’s first gay pride march since 2001. The previous event received almost no police protection and was broken up by rightist groups.

The planned march was seen a major test for the current Serbian government, which has launched pro-Western reforms and pledged to protect human rights.

But organizers said Saturday authorities have informed them that the march in downtown Belgrade was too risky. Spokesman Dusan Kosanovic says police offered a different venue but organizers decided to cancel the march instead.

Several extremist groups had said they would attack the gathering.

    • The Serbian people should hang their collective heads in shame.

    • This is going to seriously hurt Serbia’s chances to gain a bid to join the European Union. I personally think they shouldn’t be allowed to join until they can guarantee anti-discrimination for all peoples.

    • I knew it! I called this way back when you guys first posted the story about them actually attempting the march, I knew they wouldn’t be safe, hoped, but knew differently. Is there any sort of way that a non profit organization paid for endandergered LGBTQ people from other countries to come and stay in the U.S.A or Canada, or maybe even the U.K?

Its obvious these nutzo countries aren’t changing any time soon, lets get our bro’s and sis’s out of there. Is that happening and I just don’t know about it?

Ofcourse I talk with fire and excitement but have no idea how a process like that would work.
