Ore. AG clears Portland mayor over relationship

(Salem, Ore.) There’s no credible evidence that Portland Mayor Sam Adams broke the law in his 2005 relationship with a teenager, Oregon’s attorney general said Monday.
Adams, who is openly gay, has admitted that while campaigning for mayor, he lied about his relationship with Beau Breedlove, but he denies they were involved in a sexual relationship before Breedlove was 18.Breedlove said he was 17 when he and Adams first kissed, but Attorney General John Kroger said in a report that Breedlove’s account of the relationship lacked credibility because of past inconsistent statements and a prior felony conviction, as well as evidence he sought financial gain from the scandal.
“At times, a responsible prosecutor may seek to charge an individual with a crime based solely on the uncorroborated testimony of a single witness,” Kroger wrote. “However, a responsible prosecutor will do so only when there are no serious questions about the credibility of the witness’s account.”
Two former attorneys for Breedlove said they did not know whether he currently has legal representation.
The sex scandal broke in January after Adams took office. The controversy divided Portland’s gay community – some said he should resign, others that he should stay.
“I made mistakes in my personal life that led to this investigation. As a result, the city I love was put through an ordeal,” Adams said in a statement. “I am gratified the investigation has been completed, and I want to reiterate that I am sorry.”
Sexual contact with Breedlove before he turned 18 would have been a misdemeanor.
At a news conference Monday, Kroger said his office was not making any judgment about Breedlove’s truthfulness or his “personal credibility.” Instead, he said, the report questioned “the credibility of his account” in terms of how it would hold up during a hearing.
Breedlove refused to answer certain questions under questioning by Kroger’s office, including how much money he’s made from publicity surrounding the scandal, according to the report. He also refused to provide certain witnesses, the report said.
The report also noted that Adams was slow in providing investigators access to certain phone memory cards and e-mail accounts.
Adams, 45, currently faces a recall effort on behalf of a group that claims he subverted the democratic process with deceptive campaigning and abused his power. The group claims the recall has nothing to do with Adams’ sexual orientation.
Jasun Wurster, one of the organizers of the recall effort, says it will continue despite Monday’s report.
“It’s about deliberately lying to get elected, orchestrating an elaborate cover up, which included lying to the press, and his abuse of power,” Wurster said.
Kroger also looked into whether Adams hired a reporter from the Portland Mercury for a position on his staff in an effort to cover up the relationship with Breedlove, but found no evidence to merit a criminal charge.
The report also considered whether Adams asked for campaign contributions under false pretenses but again found no evidence of a crime.

Finally. There was no issue to begin with. Jeez.
Everytime you hear some idiodic “recall group” say that it has nothing to do with “whatever”, (in this case sexual orientation) that is EXACTLY what their recall effort is all about. LIARS! at least have the balls to state your REAL “cause”, so we can all enjoy your public Humiliation!
He should have not gotten himself involved with someone that young to begin with, elected officials need to show restraint. He could have really set back the gay equality movement by being a bonehead and giving our foes something to sink their fangs into.
Has shown poor judgment. Should resign.
He should only resign if Sen. Ensign resigns.
Looks like some here are as judgemental as the republicans. Did he show poor judgement…lets see, he was single, found someone cute who was over 18, and they had a relationship..SO WHAT! Where was the poor judgement? Oh, yes, he lied about it…OK, so he shouldn’t have lied but given the context and why he did, who are we to be so critical? Should he resign – absolutely not!!!! And to compare him in any way, shape or form to Ensign is just plain wrong. Ensign was/is an advocate for “traditional families”, was married, apparently spent Rep money to pay for the relationship…how is that even similar to this?
This is a waste of Portland’s time and money. Breedlove sounds like a parasite in search of someone to blackmail for financial gain, a kind of budding con artist in search of a future prison cell if he continues on this kind of path, Adams should finish his term with a hopefully wiser head and the recall group that is pretending not to be homophobic should take a flying leap over the edge of the nearest cliff. End of story.
My name is Roger Walcker. I live in Portland, Oregon. I am an “out and proud” Gay Christian Architect who also happens to be HIV+. sam Adams spoke at teh 2008 AIDS Walk with passion and eloquence about HIV / AIDS. Sam Adams walked, with 10,000 others 3 1/2 miles to earn $300,000 for Cascade AIDS Project. I am thrilled that our Oregon Attorney General, John Kroger, determined theere was nothing illegal in Sam’s conduct and there will be no charges. There may be a petition drive in July, but I think it will fizzle. Sam Adams is a great mayor, just like Barack Obama us a great President. Sincerely, Roger Walcker
Breedlove sounds like a…what’s the word?…almost have it…oh yeah—he’s a HUSTLER. If it were true, it’d be a worthy sequel to “My Own Private Idaho.” As it is, Adams showed poor judgement, but maybe the judgement was impaired by the trust he put in a hustler. That doesn’t make him a pedophile, and it doesn’t equate to misfeasance or malfeasance.
Breedlove is not as innocent as he wants us to believe. HUSTLER with a previous conviction? He knew he had Mayor Adams over a barrel and could hit him with a potential scandal and could milk it for all is was worth…either give my money Mayor Adams or I will ruin your career with the public thinking you had “relations” with a 17-year old “minor”. While Adams was salivating over Breedlove’s youthful beauty. Breedlove was hatching another plot how to enrich himself by having the mayor in a publicly precarious position. I am going on the statements of the Attorney General as to why Breedlove was not credible and therefore why he deemed Adams innocent of wrongdoing. What did we miss here?
What does the Attorney General of Oregon say of Breedlove?
Even though Breedlove claimed he was 17 and Adams says that Breedlove was 18 at the time of the first kiss (therefore an adult of legal age for intimate actions)the Attorney General says that Breedlove’s accounting of the case lacked credibility because of:
A Past inconsistent statements
B A prior felony conviction
C As well as evidence he sought financial gain from the scandal
Plus Breedlove refused to answer questions about amongst other things “how
much money did he make from publicity surrounding the scandal”
Breedlove wanted to make money from this scandal so he was, it is did not say that he was in the prostitution business servicing one client after another as in a business arrangement, this story paints him as an opportunist, as an extortionist, as a parasite, as a leech looking to enrich himself at public official’s public (in terms of loss of reputation in the public eye) and financial expense, as a probable liar whose truthfulness was not to be completely believed, as a prior felon, etc
Check out the first few paragraphs of this story again.

Breedlove needs counseling to steer him away from a possible life of parasitism and opportunistic crime and Adams needs a new brain to cure his lack of good judgement.
OK, Roger Walcker, I wuz with you till you said OBummer wuz a good president. Just cause OBummer can say the word Gay doesn’t mean he’s not a homophobe.
