Protests and complaints against Harvey Milk being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom are hardly a surprise. We can guess quite accurately where the complaints come from. However, Harvey Milk remains a worthy recipient as he actually worked for freedom for LGBT Americans. He also served with distinction in the U.S. Navy– at the risk of being given a dishonourable discharge because he is Gay. Harvey Milk is a hero and deserves recognition for being a hero. And yes, “plarsen” is correct in stating the protests show we have a long way to go.

I learned of Milk’s award via the “Speakout” section of my local paper. The viewpoint expressed was that Milk was unworthy of such an honor. We’ve come a long way, but still have work to do.
