We can wish for more, but maybe “token gay” isn’t such a bad place to be, at present. It is a lot of responsibility for that “token gay” to do a decent job, but all the movements seeking equality have gone through this phase, and the U.S. is not past this phase, yet, for sure.

Like the others, I am disappointed with this minor appointment. Are there no out gays or lesbians qualified for more substantial appointments?

Bret, on one hand, she is likely doing what is she is knowledgeable about and good at.

I consider clean energy and the environment to be things critical to good health and ultimately our survival as human beings. She is doing good, honorable and very necessary work.
On the other hand, being the token gay is very myopic of Obama to not appoint more gays and lesbians who are qualified to senior posts. Obama should thank the gay community for pulling hard and for being so devoted to his election.

We are mainstream Americans, same as anyone else, sure a minority and all that, but deserving of more recognition.

This is just another government for and by heteros.
