Obama says he supports LGBT adoption

Barack Obama assured the LGBT community that he supported their right to adopt, in a statement he sent to the LGBT organization the Family Equality Council.
Jennifer Crisler, executive director of Family Equality Council, had asked both candidates to outline their plan to “recognize, respect, protect and celebrate all of the loving families [they] seek to represent” after John McCain had declared in an interview that he was not in favor of LGBT adoption. The McCain camp has not issued a response to her request.Obama said, “But we also have to do more to support and strengthen LGBT families. Because equality in relationship, family, and adoption rights is not some abstract principle; it’s about whether millions of LGBT Americans can finally live lives marked by dignity and freedom. That’s why we have to repeal laws like the Defense of Marriage Act. That’s why we have to eliminate discrimination against LGBT families. And that’s why we have to extend equal treatment in our family and adoption laws.”
His letter ended, “I’ll be a president that stands up for American families – all of them.” (The full letter is here.)
Chrisler said that the organization was pleased with this response from Obama, and noted that over 75 percent of American households differ from the paradigm of a married, heterosexual couple raising their biological children.
“Regardless of their sexual orientations and gender identities, regardless of how many parents or caregivers are present in a family, all parents begin each day with their children at the forefront of their thoughts. On behalf of diverse families, it is critical to know how the platforms of our candidates will address LGBT and other diverse family needs,” Chrisler said.

I love that we finally have a candidate that “gets it” when it comes to our community. Now, if we could get him to support full marriage rights, he’d be nearly 100%! It’s his response to these types of questions that re-affirm that he is the right candidate choice for this country.
Although this is wonderful news; it is going to take much more to get Obama elected. The conservs are going to come out of the wood work and if we don’t match them and show up in droves, we will have another 4 years of hell. WE NEED A MILLION GAY PEERSONS MARCH and shout out enough is enough. My partner and I would love to adopt a child.
More lies from Obama! He does not support all American families and his voting record is proof. Obama does not support working families in America, he supports major visa increases, he supports illegal immigration, open borders and amnisty for illegal aliens all of which is one of the leading causes for major increases in unemployment of American working families. If a family owns a firearm for self defense Obama does not support American families to defend themselves. Obama’s policy is massive tax increases and a larger federal government, this means less freedom and more control of your money! How is this supporting all American families? I am becoming increasingly disgusted with the LGBT community. It is clear that the LGBT community has only one issue when it comes to voting for a law maker. When it comes to LGBT issues the federal government has no right becoming involved! When is the LGBT community in America going to stand up for their constitutional freedoms? This election year is doing two things for me, Ready to say I am not proud to be gay and go back in the closet.
KUDOS 4 OBAMA ! It is about time that people are putting their personal views aside and start thinking about the AMERICAN CHILDRENs needing a home, family, role models & a FUTURE>>>>>>>
I got dibbs on 7 …lol
How do you support LGBT adoption but not marriage equality for Lesbian and Gay citizens? That makes no sense. Another politician talking out both sides.
Richard W:
It’s not that he’s against marriage rights. Obama supports Civil Unions for ALL people, gay or straight - leaving the word marriage to be used subjectively by the individuals who wish to define it for themselves.
THIS I can get behind!
Yes, and we all know the Bush/McCain would NEVER take away rights from any persons…
Expedient trial anyone?
Telecom privacy?
Countless other “Patriot Act”ions?
Civil Unions are not recognized by any other country- marriage is. They have been a huge failure in the couple of States that have tried them. Civil Union’s DO NOT give access to most Federal and State benefits, as well as company benefits and all insurance. It’s a strategic attempt to have us fight endlessly, piece by piece for each benefit while labeling us 2nd class. Some things are worth fighting for.
Well said Barack Obama…we have a great progressive prospect for President!!!
I guess Ron just joined McCain as a certifiable homophobe.
It’s quite obvious Ron doesn’t pay that close attention. As far as gun rights go, I live in South Dakota (where we have one of the highest rates of gun ownership in the nation, yet have one of the lowest rates of violent crime). When the campaign came here, Obama specifically said that he only voted to ban handguns in Chicago. Because they have/had a high crime rate. He specifically said that if you own a gun for hunting or “protecting your family” that you had nothing to worry about. Not that I expect you to listen, you sound like every other internet loony out there.
