Mmm...table scraps. I agree a step in the right direction is better than no step at all in my opinion. But yeah...it wont make us shut up!

Actually, I like your table scraps analogy.

For me it's this way:

I'm starving, so of course I will accept table scraps. Does that mean I stop clamoring for the meal? Of course not!

But that means that I won't spit on table scraps and waste good food when I have a family to feed.

Again, where have I ever exaggerated or lied about what Obama's been saying to make him look better?

All I've been trying to do is debunk the rabidly anti-Obama rhetoric. When people take on extreme sides on any issues, you usually find that they put on blinders and spout increasingly extremist views about something or someone.

I really an mot trying to cheerlead for Obama, but Wayne says things that are blatantly untrue, I just try to stop and say, "Wait, but what you're saying is directly contradicted by this official source."

Sometimes it seems that Wayne would have opposed Abolition because it didn't take care of anti-miscegenation as well, which I think is rather counter-productive.

The one point that Wayne has right is that Obama prevaricates and equivocates. Guess what? All politicians do. I have yet to see how Obama is worse than any other politician. You'll never catch me saying he's some sort of savior, but I do believe that since he talks such a good game, that gives us the tactical advantage is holding him to his promises. He bet a certain way with his social capital, and we better be the ones to make sure he pays his debts.

That doesn't mean we lie about what he's said, though. That kind of pressure is . . well, kinda stupid actually.

cm said: I don’t want to destroy anything… but I am not going to accept table scraps from the plate of history. Sorry. I have, and will continue to support Barak Obama as the best -realistic- option out there. But am I going to cut him any slack for being a bigot about marriage? Absolutely not.

I think we have the same goal, but will chose to disagree on this one.

Actually this was basically my point exactly, that Obama is the best realistic option out there but that we shouldn't cut him any slack when it comes to equality. We ARE in complete agreement here, it's just that I'm going to celebrate any advance we make while still respectfully and forcefully asking for what we really deserve, which is full equality. I fully accept that the work of civil rights will never ever be done, things get slowly better and better and we just keep fighting, but if you don't celebrate the minor victories then I don't think you truly appreciate the advances we have made in civil rights.

Ok good, I'm glad we cleared that up! :) We're basically saying the same thing, cm, it's just that I choose to be happy with the few good things while staying unsatisfied in principle, while you choose to push the envelope with your dissatisfaction. If you look back at my posts, I've been saying over and over that we should not be satisfied with Civil Unions, but I've also said that I will take Civil Unions over having my husband deported because he's not a citizen.

Wayne, on the other hand:

Wayne said: Civil Unions are NOT a step forward. It’s segregation! If anything it is a step backwards.

Wayne, would you mind explaining to cm and I how this is true? How are nationwide Civil Unions with all the 1100+ rights of marriage worse than no recognized relationships at all?

How exactly is freeing the slaves worse than keeping them enslaved?

Ophidimancer, Civil Unions are NOT a step forward. It's segregation! If anything it is a step backwards. Ask African Americans about their history with "Separate but Equal". Or maybe you should take the time and actually read the Connecticut Supreme court ruling that states quite clearly that Obama's favored policy of civil unions are in fact DISCRIMINATORY TO GAY PEOPLE! Maybe you don't feel you or your relationship deserve marriage equality, but forgive us if some of us refuse to sit quietly by as you cheerlead Obama into segregating gays into 2nd class citizenhip for decades to come. NO THANK YOU.

And so you will fight against Civil Unions despite the fact that they represent a huge step forward from the status quo?

-----------

A step forward? Obama is advocating your SEGREGATION!!!! So you actually WANT to be segregated into a 2nd class (Separate but Equal) marriage status?! Jesus, that's pathetic! No wonder so many gays voted for Obama. Gays don't even seem to remember what pride is. You happily praise a politician who wants to segregate you? Is there a word worse than pathetic? I truly fear for the gay community in America.

The fact is that Obama is a fraud. He never had any intentions of keeping his promises to the Gay community. The sad part about it is that gays have no one to blame but themselves. It's not the Mormons who did this, it's not African Americans; the ones who are really to blame are the 70% of gays who voted for Obama because they liked hearing his pretty words and promises, and despite 30% of the gay community SCREAMING to NOT trust a man who so willingly befriends hateful anti-gay bigots like Donnie McClurkin (the guy who preaches all gays are child molesters, the same guy Obama had shilling for him on his S.C. "Faith Tour" and refused to fire him even after his history of anti-gay bigotry was made clear to Obama. Not to mention let a man like Obama, who attended a church that would use the fear of AIDS to justify their racist hatred of white people who they actually accused of creating AIDS as a weapon! And we screamed again and again that a win for Obama would be the death knell of gay marriage equality. But most of your put blinders on, ignored or belittled our warnings, and happily voted for a fraud. You asked for it, you got it. If you want someone to blame for the loss of our equality, look in the mirror.

Ophimidancer - by standing up, and pointing out Obama's hypocrisy, and getting attacked by other gays almost every day for it, I am doing my part.

Someone's got to stand up, and say second-best is not good enough, and hold our leaders accountable.

Civil Unions are a step up comparatively - but so was freeing the slaves, and not allowing them to vote or marry.

Sometimes wrong, is just wrong. And I for one will continue to call Barka Obama on it until I hear him say, "I believe in gay marriage."

I expect more of my President. I expect a President that believes everyone has the same rights - not equivocations thereof.

And again, I would ak you my last question:

What are you going to do about it? You just going to bitch about it on the internet or will you take action?

You seem to be against Civil Unions, so are you going to call your congressperson and tell them to vote against it?
