"...what self-rightous Snake Handling group got to him since the election to persuade him to invite a Right-wing Mega-church bible thumper to play such an important role in this inauguration?" Nobody got to him, this is what they do: they court the GLBT community in order to get votes and voted into office and then they turn their backs on us. Simple as that, we have all watched this happen hundreds of times.

It's not really Warren's anti-gay views that I have the problem with, as long as Obama repudiates them. It's the fact that he was personally involved in spearheading the pro-prop 8 message in California and that he lied about it, saying that "no on 8" would take away his religious freedom, which is bull.

I could live with Joel Osteen, who I see as much less of a slimeball, but Warren is just an insult.

As gay men, we tried to warn as many people as possible in the LGBT and Straight community that Mr. Obama would not uphold his promises . . . to anyone. He's a politician! We didn't vote for either major candidate. ~~~~~ This said, HRC, EQCA, GLAAD, THE GAY & LESBIAN CENTER, and LAMBDA LEGAL, should hold a press conference to embarrass Mr. Obama and demand an apology and the immediate rescinding of his invitation for Rick Warren to give the inaugural invocation. ~~~~~ If Mr. Obama is to be taken for his word (that America must "come together" even when they don't agree), then why doesn't he invite David Duke (ex grand master of the KKK) to come speak at his inauguration? That was a rhetorical question!

How in every thing that is right and good could Obama stand up in front of a cadre of reporters and say, with a straight face I assume: ...America needs to “come together,” even when there’s disagreement on social issues. Social Issues my keester! Gay and Lesbian, etc. rights isn't about a social issue. Its about Civil Right. Social issues are about what beverage to serve at a luncheon --- ice tea or lemomade. Would someone please tell me who or what self-rightous Snake Handling group got to him since the election to persuade him to invite a Right-wing Mega-church bible thumper to play such an important role in this inauguration? I had higher hopes, based on his promises for change, that the day of Bush's Republican Base's stanglehold on the Presidency was at an end. Brudder, was I wrong. Is this blantant disregard for Civil Rights an indicator of worst things to come? Talk about a sell out. Has Uncle Barac sold our civil rights to the highest bidder for twenty tarnished pieces of Christian Conservitive silver? Metaphorically, its gonna be a long hard swim to get back up stream to get back to where we thought we had started with this smooth talking "Promiser of Better Things To Come"!

Rick Warren is not doing this from principle, and the voices that are loudest against him doing this are being driven by his rivals for control of the Evangelical movement.

You see, Warren is trying to establish himself as the 21st Century Billy Graham. But since younger Evangelicals have a broader range of interests than just abortion and gays he needs to set himself apart from Dobson, Robertson and Graham's son. To do this he's trying to add a positive, almost New Age-y feel to his ministry.

Recognizing that the implosion of the Bush Administration was likely to lead to a Republican rout in the '08 election, Warren started cozying up to Obama so that when the smoke cleared he would be the only major Evangelical figure with access to the White House.

While the Evangelical old guard and their lackeys may cry "treason", Warren is gaining prominence on the national stage that will enable him to supplant the old fossils in the Evangelical community.

Warren is a brilliant political shark and he is getting exactly what he wants here. The fact that his being given this role is such a slap in the face of the LGBT community will only serve to enhance his position in the long run.

So we're being doubly victimized here.

Why wasn't the Rev. Troy Perry given the nod to give the invocation? Unless the Rev. Perry has become an Episcopal bishop, he certainly has evangelical roots. Now that would be something different for a change Mr. Obama.

Both Rick Warren and Obama are taking huge flack for this. Warren's followers are fiercely pro-life and see his support of a pro-abortion president as treason. The gay community feels betrayed by liberals. Both sides are pissed off that these two men are working together.

And this is exactly what needs to happen, in my opinion.

The "us" vs. "them" politics has hurt the nation, especially the gay community. Our organized efforts, especially in the case of Prop.8, have amounted to no more than "you're bigots! Vote for our cause!" It doesn't work that way, folks. Face the facts, a lot of people just don't like gay marriage. We need to have dialogue to change that. Yelling and being angry and making demands won't work. We need to respect that others feel differently, and work towards changing their minds. And yes, that does mean talking to people that we don't like.
