"Do any of the issues such as the economy or human rights mean anything to the American voters?"

Only to half or less, at most. That's how we ended up with the infamous know-nothing, George W. - twice. Even now, McCain/Palin are campaigning on a strategy that's completely void of any talk of issues, because they know they can get away with it.

A Canadian might find it hard to believe, but a large portion of the American populace is proudly contemptuous of knowledge (at least half actually believe the Genesis myth of creation is literally true), and these people are now core Republican constituents.

Since you're Canadian, you might find this BBC article both entertaining and very revealing:

John, it's interesting that you mention qualifications.

I don't see how being a Community Organizer (teaching people how to beg the government for money) is any kind of experience. As this campaign goes on, it becomes painfully obvious how few skills Obama truly has. This may actually go down as one of the most mismanaged campaigns in history.

I've said it before, this should have been a cake walk for the Democrats. No One thought that the Republicans could win the White House in 2008! Now it's changing to that there is no way that Obama can win it. (http://www.electoral-vote.com)

P.S. - If Obama knows how many states there are, why does he say there are 57 or 58? Certainly, there are mistakes made on the trail but how do you not know there are 50 states?

Trace,

Obama is an honors graduate of Harvard Law School (the #1 law school in the country), was the top of his class, and editor of the Harvard Law Review. He is an intellectual, and one of the brightest people in the world. Of course he knows how many US states there are.

I myself, run a small company of about 250 employees. I could not effectively function at work without extensive use of e-mail. It is very disturbing to me that McCain wants to oversee over 300 million people and a staff of thousands, and does not even know how to use a computer or e-mail. On this point alone, even without regard to his outdated policy positions, he loses.

And on his first major decision, choosing Palin as his vice president, he gets a failing grade. She is totally unqualified, totally homophobic - no Palin prayer will not cure us, and totally anti-democratic - yes Palin, even war criminals deserve fair trials in just societies. McCain gets another failing grade.

McCain equals another failed presidency, and another 4 years on no advancement at the federal level for LGBT Amercians.

I too would prefer a President that were versed with computer usage but I also want a President that knows how many States the United States are made up of.

Sounds like it's a no win situation.

.... the sad thing is that one will Win/Be Elected.

My father is an 85 year old WWII veteran. He retired before the Vietnam war, tried to reenlist but was turned down because of his age. He emails me all the time. Sure, he still types with two fingers as if he's pressing keys on a 19th century manual typewriter, but he can still use the computer. My big problem with McCain is a president is supposed to be a leader-- someone with a vision for the future. What kind of vision can you expect from a guy who is proud of his computer illiteracy?

Doug, I have a story too.

I've been to a good number of the states in the US. Been to a couple countries too. I've not been to nearly all of the 57 states that Obama states that he has traveled to. (I'm wondering if he ever made it to that 58th state he was talking about?)

Did anyone out there purchase one of those MAGIC JACK phones? We could never get it to work. My computer advice is, buy nothing over the internet. Try returning something. We used to have dialup and it took 30 minutes to dowwnloadd a page. I just love me hsi. I've become a blog junkie. If anyone as simple as me can use a computer MCCAIN could too. He's like all idle rich people, he has his staff do it and he is old and lazy. Ouch! Vote for OBAMA...Peace

Or could it have just been McCain's sense of humor.

Mr. McCain seems to have a very dry sense of humor. You just have to know that to understand the situation.

Most certainly he knows and has the ability to use email and the internet.

I suspect the election is going to be much wider than suspected. If the Obama camp is hanging their hat on these types of ads, they're simply conceding the election.

But then, Biden is now even making comments that Hillary would have been a better VP choice by Obama. (LOL, talk about pointing out the obvious!)

This just shows once again just how out-of-touch McCain really is.

The fact that he flew jets in the 60s and 70s has no bearing on his willingness to keep-up-with contemporary issues and 21st-Century life. The internet is one of the most pressing areas of security concern and he hasn't a clue.

He is either too out-of-touch or too lazy to learn -- either is a problem for the country. This is scary!

By the way, if memory serves he wasn't all-that-successful at flying planes either -- he crashed 3 of them. But then, as pilots say, "A good landing is -- any one you can walk away from," so I guess those were just unscheduled landings..
