Obama ad mocks McCain computer skills

(New York City) John McCain is mocked as an out-of-touch, out-of-date computer illiterate in a television commercial out Friday from Barack Obama, as the Democrat begins his sharpest barrage yet on McCain’s long Washington career.
The new fighting spirit comes as McCain has been gaining in the polls and some Democrats have been expressing concern the Obama campaign has not been aggressive enough. Obama’s campaign says the escalation will involve advertising and pushes made by the candidate, runningmate Joe Biden and other surrogates across the country.“Today is the first day of the rest of the campaign,” Obama campaign manager David Plouffe says in a campaign strategy memo. “We will respond with speed and ferocity to John McCain’s attacks and we will take the fight to him, but we will do it on the big issues that matter to the American people.”
The newest ad showcasing their hard line includes unflattering footage of McCain at a hearing in the early ’80s, wearing giant glasses and an out-of-style suit, interspersed with shots of a disco ball, a clunky phone, an outdated computer and a Rubix Cube.
“1982, John McCain goes to Washington,” an announcer says over chirpy elevator music. “Things have changed in the last 26 years, but McCain hasn’t.
“He admits he still doesn’t know how to use a computer, can’t send an e-mail, still doesn’t understand the economy, and favors two hundred billion in new tax cuts for corporations, but almost nothing for the middle class,” it says. It shows video of McCain getting out of a golf cart with former President George H.W. Bush and closes with a photo of him standing with the current President Bush at the White House. “After one president who was out of touch, we just can’t afford more of the same.”
Obama spokesman Dan Pfeiffer said the campaign was not making an issue of the 72-year-old McCain’s age, but the time he’s spent in Washington.
“Our economy wouldn’t survive without the Internet, and cyber-security continues to represent one our most serious national security threats,” Pfeiffer said. “It’s extraordinary that someone who wants to be our president and our commander in chief doesn’t know how to send an e-mail.”
McCain has said he relies on his wife and staff to work the computer for him and that he doesn’t use e-mail.
The ad is being coupled with another positive spot that highlights Obama’s change message, arguing he will provide better health care and tax breaks and bring people together.
Obama has already been showing a newly aggressive tone on the campaign trail in the past week, fighting back against the notion that McCain and running mate Sarah Palin will bring change to Washington. Some Democrats have privately groused that Obama is attacking Palin and arguing that job should fall to Biden.
Plouffe made it clear in his memo that the vice presidential nominee will be at the center of the debate going forward. “Senator Biden will be integral to that effort, both in pushing back on the lies that we’ll continue to see from our opponents, and in keeping the debate focused on delivering for everyday Americans,” Plouffe wrote. He argued that the campaign welcomes a debate over who is best equipped to change the country.
Obama’s campaign says the escalation is not in response to the changing dynamics of the race, but part of a planned strategy timed to the final weeks of the campaign after mourning the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. They insist that although McCain may have gotten a bump in national polls since his pick of Palin, Obama still is best positioned in battleground states for an Electoral College win.
Still, Obama has been playing defense as McCain has tried to grab the change mantel, created new enthusiasm with his pick of Palin and accused Obama of maligning her when he said putting lipstick on a pig is still a pig. Obama had not been talking about Palin when he made the statement, but heated accusations between the two campaigns over the flap dominated national coverage of his trip to the battleground state of Virginia this week.
The campaign was heartened that Virginia media focused instead on Obama’s planned message of reforming schools and drawing contrasts with McCain over education policy. Aides say Obama will continue to highlight differences on issues – like tax policy during a

WOW
Just WOW.
That is desperation on the Obama camp. McCain used to fly jets. He not only flew jets but he took off and landed from an aircraft carrier.
Somehow, I’m thinking that using a computer and email are really not something that would be challenging to a pilot.
When Mc flew a jet there were no personal computers and the air force did not have an e-mail service so just because he flew and landed (very badly I might add) a jet means nothing. Mc said he is ignorant of these things and guess what, I have a PC at home and use one every day at work and have 4 e-mail accounts plus several phones in my home and at work yet I have trouble using a cell phone. I find that every time I have to use one, I have to ask the person handing me it how to turn it on and then off when I’m done. HMMM! Perhaps Mc is just too lazy to learn new things, just like me, but as a potential President, he can’t afford to be.
Lucern, good thing that McCain was not in the Air Force then! You’ll find that he’s a Navy Veteran.
McCain’s statements about his internet illiteracy were simply horrifying. Someone who wishes to be President of the United States needs to be familiar with the internet – end of story.
This just shows once again just how out-of-touch McCain really is.
The fact that he flew jets in the 60s and 70s has no bearing on his willingness to keep-up-with contemporary issues and 21st-Century life. The internet is one of the most pressing areas of security concern and he hasn’t a clue.
He is either too out-of-touch or too lazy to learn — either is a problem for the country. This is scary!
By the way, if memory serves he wasn’t all-that-successful at flying planes either — he crashed 3 of them. But then, as pilots say, “A good landing is — any one you can walk away from,” so I guess those were just unscheduled landings..
Or could it have just been McCain’s sense of humor.
Mr. McCain seems to have a very dry sense of humor. You just have to know that to understand the situation.
Most certainly he knows and has the ability to use email and the internet.
I suspect the election is going to be much wider than suspected. If the Obama camp is hanging their hat on these types of ads, they’re simply conceding the election.
But then, Biden is now even making comments that Hillary would have been a better VP choice by Obama. (LOL, talk about pointing out the obvious!)
Did anyone out there purchase one of those MAGIC JACK phones? We could never get it to work. My computer advice is, buy nothing over the internet. Try returning something. We used to have dialup and it took 30 minutes to dowwnloadd a page. I just love me hsi. I’ve become a blog junkie. If anyone as simple as me can use a computer MCCAIN could too. He’s like all idle rich people, he has his staff do it and he is old and lazy. Ouch! Vote for OBAMA…Peace
Doug, I have a story too.
I’ve been to a good number of the states in the US. Been to a couple countries too. I’ve not been to nearly all of the 57 states that Obama states that he has traveled to. (I’m wondering if he ever made it to that 58th state he was talking about?)
My father is an 85 year old WWII veteran. He retired before the Vietnam war, tried to reenlist but was turned down because of his age. He emails me all the time. Sure, he still types with two fingers as if he’s pressing keys on a 19th century manual typewriter, but he can still use the computer. My big problem with McCain is a president is supposed to be a leader– someone with a vision for the future. What kind of vision can you expect from a guy who is proud of his computer illiteracy?
I too would prefer a President that were versed with computer usage but I also want a President that knows how many States the United States are made up of.
Sounds like it’s a no win situation.
…. the sad thing is that one will Win/Be Elected.
Trace,
Obama is an honors graduate of Harvard Law School (the #1 law school in the country), was the top of his class, and editor of the Harvard Law Review. He is an intellectual, and one of the brightest people in the world. Of course he knows how many US states there are.
I myself, run a small company of about 250 employees. I could not effectively function at work without extensive use of e-mail. It is very disturbing to me that McCain wants to oversee over 300 million people and a staff of thousands, and does not even know how to use a computer or e-mail. On this point alone, even without regard to his outdated policy positions, he loses.
And on his first major decision, choosing Palin as his vice president, he gets a failing grade. She is totally unqualified, totally homophobic – no Palin prayer will not cure us, and totally anti-democratic – yes Palin, even war criminals deserve fair trials in just societies. McCain gets another failing grade.
McCain equals another failed presidency, and another 4 years on no advancement at the federal level for LGBT Amercians.
John, it’s interesting that you mention qualifications.
I don’t see how being a Community Organizer (teaching people how to beg the government for money) is any kind of experience. As this campaign goes on, it becomes painfully obvious how few skills Obama truly has. This may actually go down as one of the most mismanaged campaigns in history.
I’ve said it before, this should have been a cake walk for the Democrats. No One thought that the Republicans could win the White House in 2008! Now it’s changing to that there is no way that Obama can win it. (http://www.electoral-vote.com)
P.S. – If Obama knows how many states there are, why does he say there are 57 or 58? Certainly, there are mistakes made on the trail but how do you not know there are 50 states?
Do any of the issues such as the economy or human rights mean anything to the American voters?
“Do any of the issues such as the economy or human rights mean anything to the American voters?”
Only to half or less, at most. That’s how we ended up with the infamous know-nothing, George W. – twice. Even now, McCain/Palin are campaigning on a strategy that’s completely void of any talk of issues, because they know they can get away with it.
A Canadian might find it hard to believe, but a large portion of the American populace is proudly contemptuous of knowledge (at least half actually believe the Genesis myth of creation is literally true), and these people are now core Republican constituents.
