(Wellington) A committee room in the New Zealand Parliament has been dedicated to country’s LGBT community.
The room is now officially known as the Rainbow Room. It was dedicated at a ceremony on Monday night. The renaming is part of an ambitious program recognizing the country’s various minorities. There already is a Maori Affairs Committee Room, a Pacific Room, a Suffrage Room and an Asia Room.
“[These rooms] tell the story of honest and full representation in the New Zealand Parliament,” said Margaret Wilson, House Speaker.
“It is appropriate that it is with select committee rooms that we recognize all members of our society and the paths they have taken to full citizenship with equal rights,” she told dignitaries at the unveiling, including members of the LGBT community.
The Rainbow Room is decorated with framed photographs depicting the struggle for LGBT civil rights in New Zealand, on loan from the National LGBT Archives.
New Zealand law allows civil partnerships with virtually all the rights of marriage, protection from discrimination in housing and employment, and includes the LGBT community under hate crime laws.

They are so far ahead of America. Why – because the republican party under Bush has become the party of religious hate. one wonders whether Bush studies Bin Ladens manifesto, or Hitler’s Mein Kampf.
