NYPD: Beating of gay man a possible hate crime
10.12.2009 1:40pm EDT
(New York) New York City police say a 49-year-old gay man leaving a corner deli near his home was beaten by two men in an apparent hate crime.
Jack Price remains in a medically induced coma. He is in serious but stable condition.Police say the two suspects taunted Price and yelled anti-gay slurs while he was in the store early Friday. They attacked him outside, not far from his home in the middle-class Queens neighborhood of College Point.
Twenty-six-year-old Daniel Aleman was arrested Sunday and charged with assault and aggravated assault as a hate crime. The name of his attorney was not on record.
A second suspect is being sought. The police department’s Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating.

Let’s see…yelling faggot while breaking ALL of Jack Price’s ribs, 2 collapsed lungs and a metal plate for his jaw. I don’t know, could be a hate crime…
Some people on here have been known to comment that gay-bashing should be expected in, say, Fort Worth, or even Atlanta–you know they’re all backward down there, right? Kinda like, “Why would the Gay Games go to Cleveland? Cleveland isn’t gay-friendly.” Those comments came with the foolishly arrogant assumption that bashings don’t happen on the oh-so-progressive coasts. It CAN happen to you, to any of us, and those of us in the Flyover (which includes Ft Worth and Atlanta, to an extent) have been trying to tell you that. How the hell do you have a gay man beat down in Hell’s Kitchen, in über-liberal Manhattan? It’s really no different than rogue cops raiding a bar in Atlanta. It can be ANY of us in ANY place, city or country, red state or blue. Prop 8 should’ve been proof enough of that. I wish Mr Price a full and speedy recovery from all injuries. We can’t afford to throw each other under the bashing bus just because of geography, yet there’s been more than a little of that here. It isn’t acceptable.
Drewski, funny that you should say that. Two weeks ago when my partner and I went to San Diego for the weekend we were warned to NOT walk the streets in the Hillcrest area after dark because it has become very dangerous for gays. And this is an area that was once “gay town.” No more. The straights have, and are, moving in and with this change – night time violence. What? This sort of thing happening on the left coast? Yes, yes, and yes! The same thing is ocurring in West Hollywood. Are these events being covered in the media? You must be kidding! If not for friends passing along the information we would never know. As a neighbor told me recently: “we are getting tired of you people pushing your immorality in our face.” This from a neighbor who is on his 3rd marriage.
The brief artical failed to mention how many watched both in the deli & on the street as this unprovaked attack went unchallanged. Those who bore witness are JUST AS GUILTY as the two animals. This is not an isolated attack.
Think we need more self defense training provided by are organazations. Are young friend should have had a number to call since its a major city to get back up.I hope all who read this understand I am in no way blaming my gay brother in any way!
I just wish he had demanded the police be called & stayed in the deli untill he could be sure his tormentors were otherwise busy while he walked home!
I BEG ALL WHO READ THIS HAVE A SAFETY PLAN! Have numbers of our community that has a carry permit or otherwise qualify as body gaurd’s to help get you to safety if you are ever faced with this sycho situration.Contact your local lgbt center & ask if there is any police officers friendly with us who could be requested to assist incase of a attack!
While we fight for our civil rights we will be targeted even more.Just as our black brothers & sister did in there time!
I BEG DO NOT venture out of a public place if you are confronted. Do not let animals shame or embarse you into leaving any public place & onto the street were there are no camera’s or lighting. Again our gay brother was compleatly innocent VICTUM I just tired of us being victums!
I hope all are safe tonite & our brother makes a full & speady recovery!
@ Kelson and Jessieka–the stereotypical New Yorker display of “human indifference” was the Kitty Genovese case.

If you know Queens, you don’t have to be told where Kew Gardens is. It was a nice neighborhood then, still is now. It’s not a subway stop, it’s a LIRR stop. It’s not “city” like Corona or Elmhurst or LIC or Astoria. And dozens of people in the age of “Dick van Dyke” and “The Honeymooners” heard her die. Still scars the city, not least ’cause it’s a textbook display of indifference by choice.
Kitty’s death was presented as the definitive consequence of urbanism and inevitable isolation. Her neighborhood knew plenty about her business, they didn’t wanna tell what they knew. You know anything about urban studies, read your Jane Jacobs. Kitty knew her murderer. Her neighbors did too, at least some of them. Any of you 20-nothings really wanna argue you haven’t seen the same story on “CSI (Miami or LV)” or elsewhere? Been done. Learn from it.
Is there any record of a hate crime on the books anywhere in theUSA of a hate crime where a group of Gay guys beat-up a straight man yelling heterophopic slurs?….anyone???
