NY man gets 25 years for transgender hate killing

(Syracuse, NY) An upstate New York man has been sentenced to the maximum 25 years in prison for the hate crime killing of a transgender woman.

Dwight DeLee was found guilty of manslaughter last month for shooting Lateisha Green because of anti-gay bias. The 20-year-old construction laborer is just the second person in the nation convicted of a hate crime for killing a transgender victim. He was sentenced Tuesday in Syracuse by Judge William Walsh.

The 22-year-old Green was born male, but lived mostly as a female after age 16. She was killed outside a house party in November.

DeLee was acquitted of murder. The manslaughter conviction means he intended to injure, not kill, someone when he fired into a car where Green was sitting with her brother and a friend.

    • The comments of the readers in Syracuse, make me question the city’s Christian values. I don’t rememeber an asterisk in the 10 Commandments qualifying who is a vistim of murder or not. Makes me think this jihad against Muslims by this country is misplaced. I’m ashamed to be an American.

    • Can anyone explain where the gay media was on this? Why is it that we’re just hearing about this now from a gay media source? And a simple repost of an AP story?

This is ridiculous. This murderer will get out when he is 45 years old. Still young enough to enjoy quite a few years as a free monster.

      How very sad.

    • I also think the murderer should be sent to texas and be given the Death penalty. No remorse!!

    • Murder is murder!. Saying he did not intend to kill reminds me of a child who hits other children and then try to get out of punishment by saying s/he didn’t mean to hit anyone. I do not believe in capital punishment, but punishment must still fit the crime.

    • I just read this article on a random news website off google…and the comments I read were horrifying.

90% of the people who commented made fun of and laughed about the victim. Some gave religious rants…and others said there should be a “law against transgender people”

I can’t imagine what the family must be going through…

    • That is so disgusting did someone botch the bloody case or what? Had it been a straight white male assasinated in cold blood with malice & forthought. You know it been the max sentence.Instead what 5-10 . A human life is equal to another regardless of gende race or freakin anything else. We’ll guess new york is the new linchen ground these days. Just like a “man of color” could not get justice in the south. Now its LGBT who can be slain & recieve no justice!

    • Amazing, you shot someone and the intention was to injure not kill them! Maybe if he aimed the gun at her foot, but really this is a joke.

    • Our justice system is such a sad and pathetic JOKE.

“…he intended to injure, not kill, someone when he fired into a car…”

Really? And exactly how to you determine that?

I guess one person’s life = 25 years. So if he kills 2 people is that = 50 years and so on.

      Pathetic.

    • I think the punishment was not enough if you kill someone you get life bring if he did it in texas we would have made sure he got what was coming to him!! How can anyone hate someone so much for being who they are? Such is human nature.

    • Another travesty of justice. Guns are used with intent to KILL. He should have been convicted of MURDER!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • What does it take to get a murder conviction of a GLBT person! Why is it that the courts treat us as expendible and less deserving of justice! Next, Laurence King’s murder will be found not guilty! Remember Larry brought it on himself! He told his murder he wanted him to be his Valentine. Justifiable homicide!

    • You’re kidding me, right? He intended to injure, not kill, when he shot a gun into a car at people??? Typically when people fire arms at other people…it is common knowledge that they intend to kill. What else is a gun for if not to kill? Wouldn’t people just use knives or bats if they just wanted to “harm”? A firearm is a DEADLY weapon. Any use aimed at any person should be considered used with the intent to kill. The end. This countries laws and legal system or lack there-of is rediculous. I really can’t wait to have enough money to get the hell out of here. Someday, I will leave this bullshit behind.
