No sign Mormons soften stand against gay marriage

(Salt Lake City) Mormon church President Thomas S. Monson told members Sunday to not be discouraged by those who may malign or ridicule the church as it seeks to uphold its moral values in a changing world.
His remarks on the second day of the annual spring conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are a tacit reminder of the negative backlash Mormons felt since last fall when the church worked with a coalition of groups to successfully ban gay marriage in California. Many gay marriage advocates turned their anger toward the Mormon church, picketing outside church temples nationwide. In Utah, more than 3,000 staged a protest march outside the Salt Lake City temple just days after Proposition 8 was passed by California voters in November. A local church meeting house was vandalized and envelopes filled with white powder were sent anonymously to church headquarters.
“The moral footings of society continue to slip,” Monson told the 20,000-plus who packed a church conference center in downtown Salt Lake City. “While those who attempt to safeguard those footings are often ridiculed, picketed and persecuted … It would be easy to become discouraged and cynical about the future – or even fearful or what might come – if we allowed ourselves to dwell on only which is wrong in the world and in our lives.”
Before the spring conference rumors swirled that activists planned to descend on Salt Lake City for another protest. Local activist Jacob Whipple said the idea generated by an e-mail was quickly quelled and replaced with plans for two days of community service in Utah.
“The fact is the fight against the Mormon church is over,” he said. “We were able to express how we felt right after Prop. 8. There is no need to continue protesting the church.”
Mormons hold traditional marriage as a sacred institution and a critical part of God’s plan for humanity. Homosexual sex is considered a sin, but gays are welcome in the church and can maintain church callings if they remain celibate.
The church has said, however, that it does not oppose civil unions or legal rights for same-sex couples related to hospitalization, medical care, housing or probate as long as these “do not infringe on the integrity of the traditional family or the constitutional rights of churches.”
Acting on a June letter from Monson, California Mormons were among the most vigorous volunteers and financial contributors, donating an estimated $16 million to the Yes on 8 campaign – about half of what was raised. Campaign finance reports show the institutional church gave nearly $190,000 to the campaign. Those contributions are now being investigated by California’s Fair Political Practices Commission.
Mormons gather in April and October to hear words of inspiration and practical guidance from leaders of their faith.
The event draws tens of thousands to Salt Lake City. Millions more watch the proceedings – translated in some 80 languages – via broadcasts over the Internet, by satellite and closed circuit television.
Founded in 1830 by Joseph Smith, Jr., in western New York, the Mormon church is now in more than 170 countries.

Right on brothers! Hate, hate, hate everything that is Mormon. Hate their stupid faith. Hate their stupid leaders. Hate their stupid mothers, father and children! As long as continue with hate unabated, they will relinquish.
The LDS church is a big business, and a Cult.
I am still very mad about Prop H8 and the lies and scare tactics used to try and take away my marriage. W/O the Mormons there would have likely been no Prop H8.

Lets get the facts right about the Mormon Church support of basic human rights for GLBT persons.
This year the LDS church was asked over and over to support the very things they said they were not against (hospitalization, insurance, job protections, etc. etc.). No response, nothing accomplished.
However, Mormon legislators strongly opposed any protections and compared Gays to muslim extremist and the biggest threat to America.
We live in Utah, they are extremely Anti-Gay and are only concerned about their public relations reputation.
Says who the fight against the Mormon church is over. Just because we aren’t standing outside their door with picket signs doesn’t means its over between us. They still need to lose thier tax exemptions and be exposed for the terrorist bigot organization they are.
THIER WAY ,, OR THE HIWAY-WE ARE NOT WELCOME ! GET USED TO IT ,
One local activist is not in the position to state that the “attack” against the Mormon Church is over. In FACT, it has JUST BEGUN.
No sign gays soften their stand towards religion, republicans, children and even other minorities.
I urge all gay men to dress their best drag, invite the celibate eighteen-year missionary boys to your home, get them horny(they are not allowed to masturbate), seduce them, then remove your wig. Take lots of pics.
Mormons are thrown off my property publicly and loudly!
You should see their idiotic faces while being chased! “they ‘don’t understand’….”
“The fact is the fight against the Mormon church is over,” he said. “We were able to express how we felt right after Prop. 8. There is no need to continue protesting the church.”
Sounds like someone got paid off, or is terminally stupid. With lame-ass “leaders” like Jacob Whipple it’s no wonder we don’t make much progress in our fight.
Jacob Whipple may believe that the war against the Mormon Church is over, but he doesn’t speak for me. I think every gay person should speak out against this absurd cult and the harm it does.
*“The fact is the fight against the Mormon church is over,” he said. “We were able to express how we felt right after Prop. 8. There is no need to continue protesting the church.”*
This is exactly the wrong attitude. I know my hatred of the Mormon cult is unabated. So long as the Mormon church is actively involved in taking away my civil rights, there is great need to continue protesting this vile religion. They can believe whatever fairytales they like, but I cannot be expected to respect them or their beliefs when they are so actively trying to f*ck with my life.
They will accept Homosexuals as long as they are “celibate”? Well when the Heterosexuals become celibate then they’ll have equality!
And as for Procration, I know quite a few mormons who are married (some on 2nd and 3rd marriage) and they have not procreated for numerous reasons!
These people are REALLY a joke! They follow a religion that is evem more absurd then almost any religion you can ever imagine.
They are a TERRORIST CELL group waiting to take over America. This is only reason why they want their followers to have 15+ children, why uncles marry their own neices, etc. Keep people stupid and you can manipulate them to do anything!
While the LDS church may say they are not oppossed to Civil Rights for gays, the Common Ground legislation which was proposed in UT this year was soundly defeated (by the Mormon Church). This legislation would have provided rights regarding not being fired or kicked out of your home because one is gay or lesbian; hospital visitation, etc. Don’t believe what they say!!!
I had the mormon missionaries in my house last month, with their little book, trying to convert me to their religion. I questioned them at length about the position of women and minorities in their church, and their position regarding the separation of church and state. They flatly stated that gays aren’t welcome in the church, and that there was no place for me there on that basis alone.
