It's such a stupid red herring debate. All of the religious freedom issues exist whether or not gay marriage is legal. They have to do with ANTI-DISCRIMINATION LAWS IN THE PROVISION OF GOODS AND SERVICES and all the legal conflicts between religions and gay ceremonies or events exist WITH OR WITHOUT GAY MARRIAGE

Ok, I'm confused now.

The governor had a certain period of time to sign the bill once it passed or it would AUTOMATICALLY become law, didn't he?

So why is it being sent back to be renegotiated if it already passed both chambers???

The Senate passed the amendment. The House rejected it, so now it's going to be renegotiated. The worst part is that some of the pro-same-sex marriage people voted to kill the amendment.

I'm still wondering why 365gay.com is so slow reporting this. The Senate voted HOURS ago, and the House vote was more than an hour ago. Yet there's NOTHING about either vote on 365Gay.com

Jon,

Coming from a non-religious lesbian I think your last post was well put.

We DO need to find a common middle ground with religious folks. The far religious right is hopeless and always will be. Glbt's need to concentrate on the majority of religious folks who are decent human beings who are willing to *gasp* actually LISTEN to other folks and what they have to say. The far right...not so much into that. My opinion is, they have a problem thinking for themselves so they have to rely on what their religion TELLS them to think. They're not the kind of religious people I'm talking about getting to.

I know, as a lesbian, that there are plenty of religious folks out there that are for gay rights and I'm always happy to find one more...they are out there, it's just a matter of listening, talking and listening some more.

I think the proposed amendment is fine. We're not looking for a RELIGIOUS marriage. We're looking for a civil marriage in this world.

I wouldn't want to get married in a place that doesn't accept me anyway, plus if I was straight and JEWISH, I still wouldn't be allowed to get married in a Catholic church...and I believe that is fair.

I think leaving it up to each churches discretion is fine and to make sure they aren't sued for it, etc. is fine as well. Just give glbt's CIVIL MARRIAGE.

Democrat Gov. John Lynch of New Hampshire is an another example of a Democrat who works against us. The GLBT Community should take a stand against homophobic Democratic officials who vote against us, by running independent gay candidates against them. They probably won't win, but it might wake the anti-gay Democrats wake up and stop voting against us!

Shawn - Perhaps there is part of the problem. As long as both sides (the religious right and the secular LGBT, if you want to look at it that way) are being insensitive to others' beliefs and arguing with anything and everything instead of finding a middle ground and actually LISTENING to each other... there will be no progress whatsoever. Assuming by your comments that you are agnostic/atheistic, I want you to know that I completely respect you and your views and beliefs and would never dream of seeing them as inferior. But please do not intend to insult my own beliefs! Isn't that what those on the religious right are doing to the LGBT community to begin with? insulting the views and beliefs of some in the name of "family morals?" We can do better than that.

We need to listen to one another... work with one another... and work together to make positive changes. Sometimes it's little steps. But I see it like this: many of the hurdles for LGBT rights have been caused by divisive religion. Now, more and more Christians and other belief systems are getting on board for equality... the UU, the UCC, the MCC, Episcopalian, Presbyterian, the list goes on. Like it or not, those with "breeder intelligence" make up a HUGE voting bloc throughout the country. When positive changes are made through mutual respect, those voting blocs start to change and we start to see progress like we're seeing in the New England states.

I left my very first comment on this discussion board this evening in an effort to give hope to those who have lost faith in the power that religion can have - even if agnostics just look to religion for help. I meant only to clarify that not all Christians are against equality, and some are even fighting very hard FOR equality. Check out "For The Bible Tells Me So," a powerful and compelling film. Check out Christian (and now pop/dance) singing duo Jason and deMarco - friends of mine - who have inspired many to reconcile their beliefs with their sexuality. We all have a job to do in the fight for equality. My personal fight as a straight ally is within the religious circle. Yes - I believe Jesus existed. Yes - I believe he loved and loves every single person on this earth. But Yes - I think that many of today's Christians are so unlike Christ that no one would even recognize Him by their actions. Let's work together for a common goal here, and not fuel the flame of division even more.

A few things: First - I am glad Gov. Lynch is working towards taking away any possible fight the religious right has. I think this amendment is a good thing, and he clearly has an eye on signing a bill into law that will hopefully remain a law.

Secondly - I definitely hear you on all the comments about church/state separation. Except many people don't see it that way, so it needs to be in black and white.

Finally - I completely understand what you mean when you speak badly about "religious people." I, too, am disheartened by the repuation they get. However, I am extremely religious, as well as an extreme straight ally for LGBT rights. I promise you this: no matter how much churches try to condemn and spread bigotry, there ARE still Christians in this country who are supportive, affirming, and see Jesus as a man who loved everyone equally..the perfect figure to follow in our lives. Our time is coming. Slowly, but surely.
