Neb. Catholics ask for OK for psychologists to not treat gays

(Lincoln, Neb.) Nebraska’s rules for licensed psychologists could change because of concerns about potential conflicts between religious convictions and sexual orientation.
Jim Cunningham of the Nebraska Roman Catholic Conference says psychologists and other licensed therapists should be able to refuse to treat or refer clients because of the counselors’ religious or moral convictions. But psychologist James Cole told regulators that such a rule could open the door for discrimination as long as a therapist claimed a religious conflict. Cole represented the Nebraska Psychology Association at a recent hearing on the proposal.

When I first read of this reprehensible idea , I almost thought it might be a good idea , in that it would carry over to all professions , and when they saw that gay and gay-supportive therapists from any discipline began refusing assistance of any sort ; and people became critically ill or died as a result ; the proponents of this horror would have painted themselves into a permanent designation of HATRED , from which they would never recover.
I am so tired of so-called Christians spreading intolerance and hate. Hate may sound strong but endorsing exclusion and intolerance are the seeds of hate; and boy do they love sowing those seeds. All of this cloaked in the guise of a so-called religion that accepts and loves all people as God’s children. UNLESS your gay.
What a bunch of crap. I hate the fact that I spent my entire childhood as a member of this awful Catholic institution. I don’t understand why so many gay individuals still choose to consider themselves as Catholic. I would never want to willingly be a part of an institution that does not accept me as God made me.
I always thought that Christians/Catholics would practice what they preach and come around. I now know that will never happen. They do not practice what they preach at all. It is all a bunch of bullshit to me.
We are all better than that and let them be the hypocrites that they are. As mentioned in a prior post; who would want to be treated by someone who is biased and prejudiced? They would be of no help and probably worsen your situation. Probably better they let us know what bigots they are before wasting our time or money so we can deal with someone who cares.
SHAME ON YOU CATHOLICS!!!
Why does the “religious right” need to hate so many people for so many reasons? What a horrible state to exist in, being part of a religion where you are required to HATE anyone you don’t know, anyone from a different culture or religion, anyone who dresses or looks or acts differently.
No wonder our kids are so fucked up. Too many children are growing up under the evil influences of the “Church of Some (pick one) Imaginary Diety”
Here’s a thought… If you can’t do the job, THEN DON’T DO THE JOB!
If you are so afraid of homosexuals, go be a lighthouse keeper somewhere where you don’t have to come into contact with or acknowledge the existence of any other human being.
Shane is right. I’ve been there, it really sucks. Makes the reddest part of Florida seem like Gay heaven.
I would not wish to be in the care of a Catholic bigot. I have seen the ramifications of Catholic priests attempting to “counsel” gay parishoners; suicide, self-hate, personality disorder, & more. Let the Catholics work themselves into their own isolation.
I have to say, I use to live in Nebraska and the gay population there does a lot of good things for the community with Aids outreach and the pediatric aids foundation, camp Kindle and others, do not judge them because of the state they live in, yes the catholic church is screwed, HELLO, we knew this a few years ago when all the molestation charges against priests were happening and a majority of those cases were in the NYC diocese. Its discrimination, you want counseling, find a gay friend and just talk, if you need professional help, find an lgbt community center near you, or the phone number and talk to them. They will refer you to the right people. Being gay and religious beliefs are a delicate balance that non-gays have a difficult time with. Lets save our own!
I think there should be a law passed forcing right wing evangelical Christians, Muslims and Jews to receive psychiatric treatment for their various forms of chronic and acute mental disturbances, in which they act out various forms of social stigmatization against others, justifying it with cheap theological rhetoric.
As I see it – if a licensed psychologist has moral convictions about treating ANYONE what kind of psychologist could they be anyway – they should be seeing a psychologist themselves – take their license away and send the to a Convent!
I’m a lawyer and if you’re Roman Catholic, Mormon, or Southern Baptist, don’t come crying to me for legal assistance because I don’t agree with your religious beliefs.
How’s that?
As doctors they took an oath to serve. If they are going to let their religion guide their practice then they should have their license revoked. That is blatant discrimination and the next thing you know they will want to discriminate based on colour or ethnicity!!!
Religion is a choice. No special rights for religion!
One of the biggest jokes is the bumper sticker that the evangelicals have on their cars: WWJD (What Would Jesus Do). And they have NO clue. Of course, the Catholics have: WWTPD (What Would The Pope Do). And that opens the big wooden BIGOT DOOR for them. The only thing Catholics or any of the other denominations know about Jesus is that he is the guy that was nailed to a dead tree.
These Catholics had better watch themselves. Political correctness is the only thing between them and a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia.
“A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead with no clothes. A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, and he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, he too passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and looked after him. The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’ “Which of these three do you think was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise
If they cant follow there own teachings
Screw em lets start Rule .303
Hafta agree with dr. Bob. These Xtian extremists have wet dreams about turning this country into a bible based theocracy … much like the Taliban did in Afghanistan. They are religiously insane and dangerous. I wonder how they’d like it if we mounted a massive national campaign to go after their tax exempt rackets; and deny
service to them in our businesses and professions because we don’t approve of their hate, ignorance, and “religion”.
