Navy secretary: Time has come for women on subs

(Pascagoula, Miss.) Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus says allowing women to serve on submarines is an idea whose time has come.

He says he sees no major hurdles from the Obama administration implementing the policy change.

Mabus gave no timeline for when the change would take effect. He says officials first must figure out how to do it and notify Congress about the plan. Then women must complete training to serve.

Mabus says women should be able to serve throughout the Navy and the proposed change would be in keeping with that. His comments came Thursday during a visit to Northrop Grumman Corp.’s shipbuilding yard in Pascagoula.

    • well I just hope they don’t wear their high heels like in Irwin Allens “Voyage to the bottom of the Sea” How they kept their balance on those shoes with giant squids and other nautical menaces I don’t know! ;-)

    • HOw about gays also, allowing them to serve without having to lie every day as to who they are.

How would you like it if being eg a catholic, or an Episcopal, etc disqualified you from being in the military, and you had to hide every day your religious beliefs.

I’m amazed that this country hasn’t yet had a national gay military coming out day. when perhaps 50,000 of our military, out of the prob 100k to 200k came out of the closet, and demanded discharge under don’t ask don’t tell.

      That would get some action.

    • well I can see straight girls makin bank on that one. It is just another effect of the babaric dont ask dont tell.Having a shortage of men willing to serve after discharging gay men from the service.
Maybe they think straight men might inlist if woman were present on the subs.
Because only gay men think being in a tuna can with ALL men sounds goods…lol

    • Oh No! Women sleeping inches from men in “hot bunks.” The government passed DADT in part because of the perceived threat of gay men attacking sleeping hetro men. If women are allowed to serve on subs, they’ll be subject to the attacks of hetro men!

    • I can just imagine what the MISTRESS of MILITARY life Elaine Donnelly will say about this!
