National HIV Testing Day this Saturday
This Saturday the National Association of People with AIDS (NAPWA) will coordinate the annual National HIV Testing Day. Every June 27, NAPWA pairs up with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other national and local entities across the country to bring awareness to the importance of HIV testing.
With the slogan “Take the Test, Take Control,” NAPWA encourages all those at risk of HIV to get tested. Though the day started in 1995, NAPWA has worked for years to support seeking voluntary testing and counseling if a person is at risk for HIV.According to the official website, the National HIV Testing Day “was developed in response to the growing number of HIV infections in communities of color and other heavily impacted communities,” and that the CDC “estimates approximately 250,000 Americans are living with HIV but unaware of their HIV status.”
Visit the National HIV and STD Testing Resource website to find a testing location near you.

This event happened yesterday… but it doesn’t appear to have made a blip on the radar as far as news is concerned. This is something that the LGBT community should take a great interest in because it’s about something personal, it’s about our health and the breaking of stereotypes. Since it broke out, HIV/AIDS has been labelled a “Gay disease” and even to this day, straight people don’t think that they can get it. People need to become more educated on this topic… it’s crazy how many of us don’t get tested. You’d be amazed at how many in our community simply think it won’t or can’t happen to them so they dismiss it. This is something that our community can unite against because it’s a universal problem that everybody should be able to rally against. Props to 365gay.com for keeping the community informed. I just wish that other media sources would be so accommodating.
