National anti-gay group fights for Wyoming gay marriage ban
01.22.2009 2:58pm EST
(Cheyenne, Wyoming) A national conservative Christian group has begun a telephone lobbying campaign in Wyoming in support of a gay-marriage ban in the state Senate.
Focus on the Family Action, of Colorado Springs, Colo., is pushing to get a constitutional amendment on the ballot that would stop the state from recognizing same-sex marriages performed elsewhere.“We want to see marriages protected,” said Sonja Swiatkiewicz, director of issues response for Focus on the Family Action. She said the calls began Friday, but she would not disclose the cost or number of calls.
State law already says only marriages between a man and a woman may be conducted in Wyoming. However, the state is bound to recognize same-sex marriages and civil unions performed in other states.
Massachusetts and Connecticut are the only states that allow gay marriage. Gay marriages are not allowed elsewhere, and 30 states have taken the extra step of entrenching the ban in their state constitution.
Lobbying by out-of-state groups was cited as a key factor in the passing of a measure prohibiting gay marriage in California in November.
“I feel like the Focus on the Family has just moved into the state and wants to see this happen, and I hate to see us go in that direction,” Bob Spencer, a spokesman for Wyoming Equality.
The calls have targeted voters in districts represented by some members of the Senate Education Committee, where the resolution has been assigned. No committee vote has been scheduled because there isn’t enough support for it to pass, said co-sponsor Sen. Curt Meier, R-LaGrange.
“I’ve heard from several people in Laramie asking me to support the bill,” said Sen. Mike Massie, D-Laramie, who opposes the bill. “But I’ve also heard from several people who received the calls and contacted me specifically to ask me to vote against it.”

TyYpical Christians – not happy unless they are making someone else miserable. From the state that brought you the murder of Matthew Shepard. Pathetic.
Ah – calls from Laramie, EXACTLY where Matthew Shepard was from/murdered! Keeping up their sick and hateful ways I see.
Not anti-gay, anti-neurosis. Knowingly promoting “borderline” caretaker environments for children, regardless of the gender or socioeconomic status of the caretaker environment, is no less than unethical if not antisocial behavior by neurotic legal and medical professionals. We’re still waiting for replicable, empirical data that supports your position, preferrably by MRI polygraph.
RJLigier – you give new meaning to the phrase “pseudo-intellectual”. There is plenty of evidence to support the qualifications of GLBT as parents. Evidence you obviously have willfully chosen to ignore.
Chris Sullivan said, “…..From the state that brought you the murder of Matthew Shepard. Pathetic.”
But it’s a Colorado group doing the lobbying, and the Wyoming folks who got the calls to support it are apparently asking their lawmakers to oppose it.
RJLigier, you really should go elsewhere. Don’t you know that you can catch homosexuality by posting here? Then you kids will catch it too! The closet is going to be terribly crowded with all of you in there!
Chris Sullivan,
I don’t know any of these so-called “typical Christians” you speak of. They don’t exist at my racially diverse and gay-welcoming church. Our church has very happy and friendly people in it and it does much to help the those who are in shelters, hungry and homeless in our county.
Your experience is not the same as mine at all.
I am not sure why RJLigier has chosen to fester amongst us. Maybe we should ignore him for a while.
Consider the utter brass of this busybody group! Trying to further demolish mnority rights in the state with the stain of the Sheppard murder on its picturesque mountains! I wonder how many food pantry shelves these bigots, obviously knee deep in hate money, have stocked? SHAME!!!!
thanks Roger,
and I too will rejoice when Focus on the Family is finally closed down from lack of support for its oppression of gay people. They aren’t feeding the hungry, and providing hats and scarves for the winter cold like the people who follow “uplifting the least advantaged of society” do. Feeding the hungry and helping to keep them a bit warmer in winter along with advancing gay rights is my focus as a gay, left-wing Christian.
So, RJLigier is still lying to himself. Well, here you go Moron. Here’s your daily dose of truth:
From Stanford University:
1) Several studies have shown that homosexuality tends to run in families. The probability that the brother of a gay man is gay is about four times higher than normal. Similarly, the odds that the sister of a lesbian is also a lesbian is significantly higher than normal. However, male homosexuality and lesbianism tend to run in different families: sisters with gay brothers are not more likely than normal to be lesbian. A 1993 study that traced the pedigree of pairs of gay brothers found that homosexuality tends to run on the maternal side of the family tree: the brothers had a higher than average number of maternal nephews and uncles who are gay.
2) Identical twin studies shed additional light on the genetic underpinnings of sexual preference. If there are differences in preference between identical twins, who share the same genes, then that difference cannot be genetic. Here, the research indicates that in cases where one identical male twin is gay, about half the time the other twin is gay as well. “This is way above 4 percent, so it’s got to be genetic” Goldstein said. The percentages for lesbian twins are slightly lower, but generally comparable.
3) DNA studies have identified the general location of at least one “gay gene.” The maternal heritability of male homosexuality narrowed the region where such a gene must reside to the X chromosome, because sons get this chromosome from their mother. Analysis of DNA markers on the X chromosomes of sibling pairs has further narrowed the search to a region called XQ28. It consists of hundreds of genes and is located near the tip of the X chromosome. However, there is some indication that genes located elsewhere may have a similar effect on sexual orientation, Goldstein said.
4) Fetal development studies suggest how such a gene might influence such a complex behavior. The development of a fetus into a male is accomplished by the development of the testes, which produce testosterone, which has a wide range of physiological effects. During the perinatal period, a week before and after birth, testosterone has an irreversible organizing effect on the body and brain of males. If the hormone is absent during this period, the individual’s anatomy and behavior never can become wholly male. A testosterone surge during puberty activates male sexual development and behavior.
Differences between gay and straight sexual orientation appear at a very early age. In a study, a group of openly homosexual men were asked when they first became aware of their attraction to men and boys, when they realized that they were gay and when they “came out” to others. The group reported becoming aware of their attraction at a very young age, between 5 years old and puberty. Self-awareness of their sexual orientation took place around puberty, and coming out of the closet took place much later.
