ANyone involved in any kind of pageantry KNOWS that taking any staunch political stand is a death sentence! These contestants DO NOT represent California VOTERS…they are not supposed to turn the pageants into political platforms or religious platforms (one in the same these days) She id not being adminished FOR her views, she is being admonished for USING the pageant as a platform and Hilton should be admonished for posing the question in such a wa that it put her in a position to do that! The idea of EITHER of these “bitches” ‘representing me in ANY way, as a Californian OR a gay man is LAUGHABLE!

She could have stated her answer in a different manner as according to the judge. Remember she is speaking for the state that has a majority of GLBT persons living within its vicinity. Even though everyone is entitled to their own opinion, we can’t fault her for expressing hers but, she was politically incorrect when she used the terms IN MY OPINION and IN MY COUNTRY.

Though I don’t know much about Perez Hilton, but I do know this, questions for pagents are pre determined by the judges and so it was not an off the cuff question that was being asked. It was a fair question and she just fumbled on her answer.

The whole idea of a pageant is to show that the contestants are not just about beauty but also that they have talent and are aware of the situations that are happening around. Remember that she, if she had won, would have to represent the country in the Miss World Pageant, where she maybe asked tougher questions about happenings in other parts of the world.

Well this is just my opinion, I know that some people will not agree with me

I read that Perez just didn’t run off his mouth with this question. The question was brought up to the Miss. USA board and it was agreed that it could be asked. I agree that she ‘flubbed’ her answer in the manner, not her beliefs. When being a person in the public as Miss USA is, one must be ready for such questions and be able to answer with the grace and dignity expected. She flunked. I listened to Trump and he said it didn’t make a difference in the results, she wouldn’t have won anyway. He owns the pageant so not doubt has inside information. Though, runner-up is close. Goes to show…..”Don’t judge a book by its cover!”

And, while I agree with you 100% about Perez Hilton being a total piece of crap, the reality is that expressing an opinion in a public forum (and on national televisionno less) has consequences for good or ill. You know the old saying about freedom and responsiblity I am sure and unfortunately Miss California (just like the rest of us) has to be responsible for what she says. She answered with her honest (albeit ill-informed) opinion and she has ever right to, but other people have the right to disagree with her and find her opinion offensive.
If she had said that she believed that the races shouldn’t legally be allowed to mix in marriage or that Christians shouldn’t be allowed to marry Jews or Muslims it would be universally accepted that her opinion, free as she is to express it, was bigoted. And while Perez Hilton was classless and wrong to verbally attack her the way he did afterward, he had the right to judge her fitness to represent this country as he saw fit while he was on that panel.

I do not believe she lost the crown for venting her true opinion. Miss California should not be penalized or looked down upon for expressing what she believes. Nevertheless, I believe that she did not phrase her statement correctly and her answer was not very intelligent. If she would have maintained a neutral position then definitely the crown would have landed on her head. Miss California should have answered in the following way:

“While I personally believe that a marriage should be only between a man and a woman, everyone is entitled to pick who they want to spend the rest of their lives with and be recognized legally by our democratic government. Perez, I am not opposed to or favor same-sex marriage. All I know is that love is love and everyone should be entitled to experience that wonderful feeling. Thank you.”

If she would have said something around that line… she would have won… She clearly favored the right. The question DOES belong in a stage. Bravo to Perez Hilton for putting a social issue where it belongs. Thumbs down to him because regardless of her answer that is no way to treat a lady for venting HER OPINION. Because of people like Perez Hilton and his big mouth is why Conservatives hate us. We must be tolerant to others as well.
