Milk Day moves forward in Calif.

(Sacramento, California) A bill that would designate May 22 as Harvey Milk Day has been approved by a key committee in the California Senate. The measure now moves to the full Senate for a vote.

May 22 is Milk’s birth date. He would have been 80 this year.

It would then need House approval before going to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R). The governor vetoed a similar bill last year saying that while he respected the measure’s intent, he thought Milk’s “contributions should continue to be recognized at the local level.”

Both bills were filed by openly gay state Sen. Mark Leno (D-San Francisco), who said when he submitted the current bill that he hoped positive publicity over the movie “Milk” would encourage Schwarzenegger to support the legislation this time.

It would create a  statewide “day of special significance” recognizing Milk’s life and his contributions but would not be a holiday, meaning there would be no cost to the state

Milk was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977 and shot to death a year later by former supervisor Dan White.

White was convicted of manslaughter, and served a little more than three years in prison before committing suicide.

In the years since his death, Milk has become one of the most recognizable martyrs of the gay rights movement.

    • “…local level?” Is the governor brain dead? By the reasoning the Cesar Chavez Day should only be recognized in the farm lands of central California – keep it localized. What a dumb shit. But he doesn’t have a monopoly on being a dumb shit. The state legislature overflows with dumb shits.

    • A day to honour Harvey Milk is important because it is a day to honour a person who lived to give hope to others.

    • This is the perfect bill to shove down the throats of those who want to keep gays and lesbians from being recognized as intelligent and essential contributors of society and culture. This bill will go right up the tight asses of the “superior” and bigoted Christians and Mormons of California – as well as all other homophobes.

    • Doesn’t conservative, homophobe, REPUBLICAN, Arnie ShwarziNazi have to sign it? and then will the bigot, haters of Cali be able to vote on it?

      Hmm.

I’ll believe it when I see it!

LOVE HARVEY MILK, He deserves a national day! We’ll have a GAY PRIDE or an LGBT month before its all said and done, just most of us won’t be around to see it unfortunately!

Just as the old bigots die off, so will the open minded “liberals” too…

    • This is a most excellent idea. I was living in San Francisco when this horrible day occurred and remember vividly how I felt and how not only me, but hundreds of thousands of good and kind gay men and women felt the rug had been pulled out from under them. Harvey Milk was a truly remarkable man who deserves to be remembered throughout the ages in memory of his fine work for human kind everywhere. Let the bigots protest, this day of celebration is an absolute must for Harvey Milk and every single homosexual in the United States and the world.

    • Wait until all of the people that make $$ in this gay socialist state leave because of this. We’ll se how the economy does then!

    • To the Straight & Proud person: There is nothing wrong with being Straight and Proud, in fact some of my best friends are straight. But why do you have to hate? Why can’t you see that the fight for full citizenship affects us all? You actually seem upset that this might pass…why? Do you mind Cesar Chavez day? What about MLK day? If you’re fine with those days, why would Harvey Milk day be any different for you?
