Miami judge who struck gay adoption ban demoted

(Miami) A Miami-Dade circuit court judge who ruled Florida’s gay adoption ban is unconstitutional has been demoted.

Judge Cindy Lederman has been removed from her 15-year post as top administrative judge over Miami-Dade’s juvenile courts. The new chief justice over Miami courts says he wanted new perspectives and leadership.

Lederman ruled in November 2008 that Florida’s gay adoption ban was unconstitutional, a case now on appeal. She also oversaw numerous juvenile justice programs in Miami and publicly scolded state officials in 2002 following the disappearance of 5-year-old foster child Rilya Wilson.

The new top judge in Miami’s juvenile courts is Orlando Prescott. Lederman will remain a juvenile court judge and says she respects the decision.

    • Florida is the worst state in the whole country when it comes to gay rights and protections. This shows why, they stack the cards.

    • Horrid state. The only thing bigger than the line of drool hanging form the locals’ slack-jawed mouths are the bugs. Both are exceedingly unpleasant. Newsflash: It’s a swamp. The funny part will be when global warming swamps the state leaving the retarded republicans who run it up to their fat asses is swamp water, alligators and non-native pythons. Fun times fun times.

    • Ft. Lauderdale, Miami and Tampa have their charms, but the state as a whole is really ass backwards. That’s what happens when too many convervatives live in one place.

    • Well, Florida long and colorful history of being anti-gay. Guess which person in 1977 who pushed for the adoption ban in Florida. Any takers? Well, it’s Anita Bryant. For those of you who don’t know who she is? I recommend watch the movie “Milk”.

    • Not surprising in Florida. Can’t have these judges recognizing the civil rights of minorities, now can we????

    • Where do you think those damn conservatives come from? The other 49 states!!! They weren’t born here! Most adults in Florida have never even met a native born Floridian. Florida would have to have a birth rate exceeding any third world country to have a population that has grown this fast. People come to Florida for the beautiful weather, lack of snow and low, low taxes. Anita Bryant wasn’t born here. Hell no! She was a snow bird like the rest. We also have a huge Cuban population… very catholic and conservative. Heaviest in Miami-Dade County. As for Ft Lauderdale, if you go west of Wilton Manor, it gets very conservative, just like their recent mayor. Do us a favore and take your conservatives back home!

    • John’s got a point. Yes, Florida does get its wingnuts from other states–but they wouldn’t flourish in Florida if it weren’t for a very backwards native culture. Carl Hiaasen did a great exploration of this once, on 60 Minutes. Am I surprised that a judge who didn’t stick to established “wisdom” was demoted? No. It’s Florida, and Florida is a national joke when it comes to its legislature and the ethical standards found in any level of government.

    • Well I live in Florida, and I know that they’re Republicants, and Christian uni-bombers. But there is a gay community down in Florida, and most of us are not “slack jawed”, so stop crapping on us, like we’re dimwits. (Michael)our communities are just like your communities. Yes, our state is ass backward on alot of things thanks to the “SOUTHERN BAPTISTS”, and “Christians”. I am a resident of Florida, and I’d wish you think before you type next time. We already have people hating us cause we’re gay, but calling us all “slack jawed” is an insult to the LGBTQ community and to those that support our rights.

    • I have noticed lately that it seems like Florida and Texas are competing for the title “we have the craziest people in the nation” I just wish they would leave gay people out of it.

    • I live in Florida as well, and while there are a fair number of northern transplants in the bigger cities, the overwhelming majority of the state is as backwater as anyplace in the deep south. If you aren’t in the heavily populated areas of Miami or Tampa, you might as well be in Alabama.

For the most part, Florida attracts retirees, toothless riff-raff from the bible belt for whom Florida is a paradise compared to the shit-holes they come from, and ex-cons who are parolled from southern prisons.

Ah no… That would be Utah…
