This could be an important step if it works.

----------

If you are a registered CA voter, sign the petition at www.yesonequality.com/initiative/ to restore marriage equality to CA. 700,000 signatures are needed by mid-August to qualify for the 2010 election.

To a previous poster: Maine voters did in fact vote down TWICE a law banning discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. It passed the third time, in 2005.

Let's think about this. Even though the lawsuit doesn't challenge Section 2 of DOMA, it has implications. I'm from PA. If I get married in MA, the federal government would have to recognize my marriage even though my home state wouldn't? This could get very interesting.

To those you are currently whining because Obama didn't wave a magic wand and gave you everything you wanted. Get really people are you living in the same world as us?
I mean he had to fix the mess that 12 years of Republican rule left us in. We have straight and gay couples losing their jobs and homes. He has the wars that Bush left him, now he has the idiot in North Korea that is treating everyone in range of his nukes. Heck he has only been President for 6 months! Good lord, I think Bush was taking his second vacation at six months and ignoring the CIA and FBI's warnings about a terrorist attack. Remember 9/11?
I am not saying the human rights are not important but those things I have listed above have to come first. Sorry food on the table, a roof over your family's heads have to come first and this is something that both straight and gay families can understand. It is hard to fight for civil rights when your child is hungry or you are about to lose your home.
Next for those of you that are not politically knowledgeable. You do know that before last week's ruling that gave the democrats the 61 seat in the senate, the Republicans could filibustered any gay rights laws or repeals of DADT or DOMA. That's right they could filibuster any and all laws to the point that it gets dragged down into nothing. Of course those of you who are throwing a hissy fit because he hasn't gave you everything you want don't want to hear this.
Let's be honest, if Obama tried anything before last week it would have ended stalled in the Senate. The Republicans would have done everything in their power to stopped Obama repealing DADT or DOMA . The brief that his administration did was because he didn't have the majority. Obama couldn't let on because the Republicans would have been all over it if he didn't. Every played poker people?
Obama would have only one shot at making changes and if he does not have everything lined up just right we would end up in the same situation that Clinton was in. Remember it was the Republican control Senate that gave us DADT. We will end up exactly the same place we are now or worst.
The thing is Massachusetts had same-sex marriage since 2004 (5 years) they could have filed the same law suit any time but they didn't until a week after the democrats got a filibuster proof senate. Interesting isn't it. I mean the democrats get 61 seats in the Senate a week ago and now this lawsuit which will repeal the federal DOMA because it interferes with the state. Plus for those who do not realize this but the Department of Immigration is going to have acknowledge same-sex marriages of immigrates to the US or risk US marriages not being acknowledge by other countries for immigration purposes.

This sounds like someone finally is bringing an intelligent, well though out suit against the discrimination by legislation that is DOMA.
