Mass. man says Brazilian husband denied US asylum
10.26.2009 2:11pm EDT
(Boston) The Massachusetts husband of a gay Brazilian man says his spouse has been denied asylum that would allow them to be reunited in the U.S.
Tim Coco said Monday that the Obama administration did not act on a Friday deadline in the case of Genesio “Junior” Oliveira, effectively denying his request. The Justice Department did not immediately return messages.Oliveira had sought asylum because he said he was raped as a teenager. His request was first denied in 2002. He returned to Brazil after losing an appeal in 2007, two years after he and Coco married in Massachusetts.
The Associated Press does not typically name rape victims, but Oliveira allows his name to be used.
In March, Sen. John Kerry asked Attorney General Eric Holder to grant Oliveira asylum on humanitarian grounds.

I suppose it makes you feel better to have someone to blame. So the easy target is Obama, but really at the end of the day all you’re doing is beating up your keyboard. While I’m equally as pissed off at the lack of thought given into the passage of the TARP funding, and the fact that the majority of the white house are beholden to the bank industry. I do think that Obama is at least trying desperately to change the status quo, in ushering in a new era of diplomacy, and breaking down the walls of which divides our country from the rest of the world, thanks to the previous administration. I aslo believe it’s irrational, and a bit unfair to compare him to Bush. If it were the beginning of 2012, and the hate crimes bill is the only progress we’ve made, then I wouldn’t have a problem agreeing with the anti-Obama rainbow squad, we’ve got going on right now. But damn it people, this is only beginning of what hopefully will be a beautiful friendship between this administration, and the whole of the rainbow community. By the way, whoever thought that march did us any good, is completely dillusional. Oh, yes I was there, and what did I learn besides from Lady Gaga is way too small? Absolutely nothing. I mean it was nice seeing “everyone” come together, but what did we come away with? NOTHING!!!
Hey Mavsfan;
Well, I live in a country with so called “socialized” health care. It ain’t perfect, but we live longer than you do, we enjoy the third highest standard of living in the world, and 90% of Canadians are happy with our healthcare, although 100% want to see it improved – always room for improvement. Otherwise, we’re capitalists just like you.
And, miracles of miracles, we are still a parliamentary democracy. Imagine!
This is not a failure of your president’s –it is an amazing act of courage in a completely hostile environment.
Leave your heath care to the “Market” and continue to die young. Your choice.
Let me try and address everything:
-War in Iraq not based on lies, that idea is simply Democratic propoganda. Administrations are forced to make tough decisions based on the information that they have at that time. History tells the rest of the story.
-9/11 was a tragic incident that happened a few months into Bush’s presidency, but was largely planned during Clinton’s. How would you have proposed preventing it? I mean really, how indoctrinated are you that you blame Bush for 9/11?
-Abu Ghraib was a few soldiers who acted egregiously, and abused their power in a prison setting. They were punished severely. Please tell me, how was this Bush’s fault? It is not as if he ordered that conduct of his soldiers, believe it or not, soldiers still maintain free will and can act out of accordance with propriety.
-Katrina was a natural disaster! Does Bush now control the weather? The people of that city were warned to evacuate. The city of New Orleans sits in a geologic bowl! It has been struck hard by hurricanes before, and will again. So, Corps of Engineers’ provisions for keeping the city from flooding failed and people ignored warnings to evacuate. How is this Bush’s fault?
Here’s my short list of Obama “incompetancies”:
-Omnibus Spending Bill, aka “Porkulus” bill
-the idea of socialized healthcare
-unfathomable mounting debt; the Chinese are surely laughing
-calling out Fox News as an enemy to the White House. Can you imagine if Bush had called out, say MSNBC?
-Joe Biden: needs no other explanation.
-apologizing to the world. Honestly, do you hear other nations’ leaders apologizing? No! When the world is in trouble, who do they call on? They call on the United States to save their asses.
-Gitmo, his “Czars” which several have alrady been forced to resign, and I’m not even counting all his broken promises to the gay community…because honestly broken promises seem to be a staple of many politicians.
I really could go on, but I will resist beating a dead horse.
To what incompetence have you seen in the last 9 months? Given the mess he has to clean up from the last eight years your probably expecting a magic wand moment.
No Obama hasn’t had a shoe chucked at his head… he also hasn’t invaded a country on lies either. People are still dying because of that.
Your right… incompetence is relative. 9/11, Iraq war, Abu Ghraib, Katrina… Obama has a long way to match that!
Incompetancy is entirely relative and completely subjective. I would argue that Obama’s presidency thus far has been fraught with incompetancy.
Just a simple matter of difference of opinion. And to your point, has Obama had a shoe chucked at his head while giving a speech?! No. The most egregious thing he has encountered is being called a liar.
But for sake of argument, let’s disregard the actual “number” of death threats received. Presidents will always be exposed to such vitriol. It is still their job to get things done.
@MavsFan
You’re kidding right? Barack Obama has gotten 4oo% more death threats than Bush as released by the Secret Service. The Secret Service has been stretched thin because they investigate each and every threat.
You are comparing Barack Obama to the bigot George Bush who endorsed a Constitutional Amendment banning same-sex marriage to appease the rabid right-wingers. Laughable. On Wednesday President Obama will be signing Hate Crimes Bill into law, sorry to disappoint you.
It’s not even a year into his presidency and you Log Cabiners are throwing hissy fits about broken promises. But you compare him with 8 incompetent years of Bush…LMAO
@ marcus99: I’m pretty sure Bush received jus as many if not more death threats than Obama. Let’not play the “poor, poor President” game. Don’t make excuses for his inaction. Obama has a majority there in Washington and still can’t seem to get shit done. Bush did more in the way of passing legislation without the majority his last two years of office. (Im not commenting AT ALL on whether I agreed or not with this legislaton, just pointing out that he still managed to get shit done.)
Obama operates on broken promises, and as such will not get reelected. Pretty soon I’m just going to have to make a trip up there to Washington and take my rights! Alas, wishful thinking….
I agree 100% with marcus99. It’s only been a year people! Honestly do you really think that every single unfair decision is made by Obama himself? I’m gay and have had my fair share of discrimination and tragedy due to discrimination against my sexuality…but insulting President Obama doesn’t help the cause one bit. Stop complaining and be patient. Rome wasn’t built in a day.
Counting down to 2012.
Listen folks;
Your country is in the economic toilet. You are bankrupted by war, insanity, and general disagreement on just about everything, as far as I can tell.
You had, let me think…oh yeah, it was zero debate about invading Iraq, yet you can’t seem to get your act together to support your president on basic healthcare.
You have a great president who has been in power one year. He has had more death threats against him than any other president. Ironically, loved by the rest of the world, yet denigrated constantly by his own country.
What precisely are your alternatives, do you think? You are not all gonna get what you want as soon as you want it. You can’t just cast a vote, and then hold out your hand to get your goodies.
Support him. Work with him. Your belly aching is feeding your own enemies.
I sympatize with the Olivera case. I face my own challenges with immigration and my partner -12 years later! But my prime minister is not gonna solve my problems. If he tried to, he would work on nothing but imigration files 24/7.
Mr Oliveira applied for asylum due to being raped as a teenager. Not to sound unsympathetic, but that is hardly the basis for asylum. Teenagers all over the world get raped, unfortunately we can not grant each and everyone asylum. If we had equal rights, Mr. Oliveira would not need asylum. He would be able to join his spouse in America. This is not Obama’s fault, or Bush’s fault, or anyone else’s fault. It is the voters fault for voting for people they thought would represent them in congress, knowing those individuals have their own agenda. Good luck Mr. Oliveira.
@Gaylthacan – Obama has a lot of shit on his plate, but I do agree that his support for LGBT comes in attendance at HRC Dinners and Gay Tea & Scone Days at the White House.
~~
So far, he has yet to act on shit, and he’s almost a year into his term. Unless he does some shit, and Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes this wednesday does NOT count, he will not get re-elected in 2012. DADT, DOMA….nothing. Eat me Barack. Im sick of your empty promises and chain yanking. Among the many reasons I didn’t vote for McCain, because there was OH SO MANY, primarily was because that whore…I mean Bulldog-in-lipstick would have overturned Roe V. Wade and thats just not cool. He got everyones vote by default because nobody wanted her to be pres. (for real, the old man would have died by now, or maybe in the next year). I wanted The Hills. I wish she could have ran.
Get your shit together Barack. The Gays are getting pissed over your shit-talk and “the time isn’t right” bullshit. Use your hand for something other then beating off under the Resolute Desk and sign some goddamn papers giving us our fucking rights. Fucker.
They would be no worse.
I tend NOT to judge people by what worse people would do.
Yeah, I’m sure McCain – Palin would be so much better.
Tell me again, all you Obama fans, about his great support for gays and lesbians.
Apparently it surfaces only at GLBT fundraisers and gala dinners.
