Nice article! Gay marriage was not "on the map" for me in 2002 or so when my husband and I had our commitment ceremony. Consequently, I didn't think it would be a big deal.

It was. It was very, very powerful and deeply emotional. It felt like the "end game" of gay rights. (Full equality of recognition of relationships.)

A little nit, though:

>the exit of a Roman Catholic charity from the adoption business

I'm pretty sure that this had nothing to do with gay marriage; it's just that it occurred at the same time that gay marriage was being hotly debated.

This was caused by publicity that the agency had been quietly placing kids with a few gay families, which goes against church doctrine. The church demanded that the agency come in line with the church's teachings. If they did that, they would violate the terms of their state license to facilitate adoptions. So...to the sadness of many people (because the reputation of Catholic Charities in this regard was sterling), they gave up their adoptions work.

I remember years ago reading a blog where a hetero boy called the state of Massachessetts, "Fagsachussetts" and he referred to San Francisco as "San Fagsisco"

I basically cried and just thought wow, with idiots and morons like this, we'll never have Equality. So here we are 5 years later! I would so love to tell that guy wherever he is, I am PROUD OF "FAGSACHUSSETTS" and Proud to be a "Fag" your words and your hate can't and won't STOP us! (if we take back the hurtful words, they can't use them against us as a weapon.)

Congrats MA, CT, IA, VT, ME and NH(?) Lets get out there and get more Equality.

I hope that people from the states with more rights, especially marriage equality will help us out in other states across the country to achieve equality, whether it be letters, phone calls, trips to events, etc.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

My favourite was the logical fallacy, "No one who’s proud of being an American wants to be accused of being a bigot, so some people retreat into a live-and-let-live situation.” -- Bishop McManus

Oh my, how revealing that was, on so many different levels...such as why the perception supercedes the reality of bigotry, and why "live and let live" is a bad thing when I believe it's somewhere in the bible but of course Catholics don't much read that as everybody knows.

Eddie, it really does not matter if it is 18 couples or 18 million couples.

The count means nothing as to if this should or should not be allowed. Marriage is a basic community right that should be allowed all adults.

Congrats Mass!

So, Massachusetts has only had about 12,167 same-gender marriages in the past 5 years!

California had 18,000 in just 5 months!!!

Imagine how many more would have wed in California, had Prop. 8 not passed!?

What!!! According to the members of the Christian Taliban, Massachusetts fell off into the Atlantic 5 years ago when almighty G-d smote that state due to their support of same-gender marriage!

Wow! So great to hear that the State of Massachusetts did NOT fall off into the Atlantic (much to the relief of it's residents) and that ALL of it's citizens are and have been enjoying marriage equality for 5 years!!!

Happy "wood" anniversary to ALL Massachusetts couples!

This story is good overall, but there's one glaring error I'd like to comment on, in regards to Catholic Charities which did adoption work prior to equal marriage in MA: the charity had been placing kids with gay couples for years. It was the Catholic Church that insisted that the charity stop doing adoption work entirely, as a gesture of defiance towards equal marriage. The charity had been receiving state funding, and was abiding by non-discrimination laws that allowed for adoption by gay parents. But the church felt that they would be better served by lying about how gay marriage killed their adoption service. NO, THEY killed it in a mean-spirited attempt to thumb their noses at the civil authority, all the while accepting tax breaks from the state, and state funding of their adoption charity. These kids that were placed with gay parents were often some of the most difficult kids to place too! The older ones, with lots of baggage resulting from many years of abandonment and fostering and institutional placement. So, now those kids have even fewer adoption advocates and services working for them, all because the church wanted to be able lie about marriage equality.

Poor Bishop: he doesn't want to be called a bigot. But he doesn't mind calling homosexuals "disordered" and "evil." Bullies love to dish it out, but they don't like people fighting back.

Mineau, your sky may be falling, but our's isn't. And people who believe the way you do that the sky is falling (due to marriage equality and due to equal rights for all) are getting less and less in numbers every year due to "natural attrition".
While the number of people who support us as they mature into young adulthood is increasing every year.

Mineau, you know that the amount influence of people who believe as you do is decreasing as US society is evolving (in the New England region especially) and that has you scared, doesn't it?
