Maine Pediatricians Urge Voters to Reject Question 1

From a press release:

(Portland, Maine) Citing child welfare and their commitment to support what is best for children, physicians from the Maine Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatricians (AAP) today announced their support for the NO on 1/Protect Maine Equality campaign.

“Children who are raised by legally married parents benefit from the legal status granted to their parents. What is good for parents and families is good for children,” said Dr. Jonathan Fanburg, president of the Maine Chapter of the AAP. “The Maine Chapter of AAP is opposed to the referendum vote that challenges the marriage equality law.”

The Maine Chapter’s statement reads, in part:

“As physicians who care for children and their families, we are committed to supporting what is best for children. And there is no question that when their parents can marry, children are more protected legally and socially.”

“Marriage equality is the right thing for Maine’s children, and will strengthen and protect families who have lacked legal recognition for too long,” said Augusta pediatrician Dan Summers. “As pediatricians, we see how supportive parents — whether gay or straight — positively impact the development of children. That is why we oppose the referendum that would rescind the law that allows same sex couples to marry.”

A national report commissioned by the national AAP concludes that the legal status that marriage achieves “promotes healthy families by conferring a powerful set of rights, benefits, and protections that cannot be obtained by other means.”

    • This is wonderful news indeed! Of course there are some who would say that the science and reasoning behind this doesn’t change what their Bible says about the subject. This is a weak arguement considering they have changed thier stance on subjects such as: eating pork and shellfish, stoning children for disobedience, women wearing long hair and skirts, men being clean shaven, etc, etc, etc. All becuase the science and reasoning have changed over the centuries. BUT they cannot change their perspective on homosexuality for the same reasons. Talk about being hypocritical and narrow minded.

    • Facebook user: I agree, great idea. Please don’t compare our side telling facts, even if hard hitting, with the lies from the christianistas. Yes they say things that are not true and stir up the innocent and ignorant. We can be hard hitting, incite fear (where warranted) and maintain the high ground.

How about an ad where a girl comes home from school and instead of saying “today I learned I can marry a princess” saying “today I was told by the school nurse that your signature isn’t good enough as you are not a parent of mine. I thought you were my mommy, do I have to move out?”

They should run ads where a child is on a gurney being rushed to the emergency room and have the door slam shut in front of the parent. Have a nurse come out with a big cross around her neck and coldly tell the parent that she cannot see her child and its too late anyway, already died.

We should not be timid as we always are. We should publish names of bigots, we should scare good people by these scenarios. GOOD PEOPLE are being told we don’t need to marry….show them why that is untrue.

    • It is important to get ALL our allies on board, pediatricians, psychologists, psychiatrists, teachers, religious leaders– all those who KNOW that a ALL marriages deserve support and protection, AND that this is good both for children as well as for the partners. Congratulations for Pediatricians for standing up to be counted. They will catch a lot of flack for doing so, but this cannot change the fact that they are experts who know what is good for the welfare and lives of children.

    • @Ron Bill,

365gay news has stopped airing their news on the LOGO channel, and so I believe they don’t really care what is up there for questioning. I miss the news about 365gay, please bring it back. I used to watch it religously.

    • Kudos to the doctors!
More good people need to speak out, loudly and clearly, about the importance of marriage equality.

    • If only someone would make a proper political scare ad using this support and asking the question, what happens to our kids if their parents relationship isn’t recognized, and do you really want to be responsible for that? Will someone PLEASE make this ad? I have no desire to be as putrescently deceitful as the right, but I have no problems using their guilt tactics in the context of actual fact. I mean it works for them why the hell aren’t we doing it?

    • This kind of professional needs to be publicized and known so people know the difference between truth and the vicious lies propagated by our prejudiced opposition.

    • Kudos for the Docs! It does take intelligent people to say what’s right and just for human beings. The Christian Taliban Republitards only show us every day how stupid and backward they are!

    • Can we get the teachers on-board? Has anyone contacted the NEA? The professionals are the most powerful/viable counterweights to the conservative churches.

    • This is EXCELLENT – shout it from the hilltops, publicize it EVERYWHERE. Get it on TV, post it on your Facebook, bring it up at work, xerox it and stick it on utility poles. This will have weight in Maine – it needs to be put out there!
