Maine gov urges residents to vote for gay marriage

(Bangor, Maine) Maine Gov. John Baldacci is urging residents to vote against repealing the state’s same-sex marriage law while acknowledging his past opposition to gay marriage.

Baldacci said Tuesday that he once preferred civil unions to gay marriage but came to believe a civil union is not equal to civil marriage. He signed the gay marriage bill into law last May.

In one week, Maine voters will cast ballots to decide whether to repeal the state’s gay marriage law, which was passed by the Legislature earlier this year.

Baldacci says same-sex marriage is an emotional issue and says good, honest people are on both sides of the debate.

The governor was joined at the news conference by members of the Vote No campaign.

    • Thanks Governor–you are a role model for other politicians who regularly pander to the gay community but never back-up their words with deeds nor have the courage to put their reputation and political position on the line.

I can’t vote for your re-election, but I will certainly be sending you a campaign contribution!

    • Bare in mind, Baldaccci has not been just talk on this issue, he goes down in history as the first governor to sign marriage equality into law.

    • THAT is BALLS. Thank you for your support, Governor Baldacci. I hope the Mainers (and others) on this site pay attention. We want politicians to stand up for us, to take a stand for us, even at the risk of pissing off a large part of the electorate. Remember the courage of his actions and respect it. Wow…again, thank you, Governor. This is only one action, but it shows integrity.
