I think that it is time the federal government stepped in and advised the churches to keep their noses out of political issues.

I am further upset by the fact the these inidividuals who call themselves christians are continuing to preach against the civil rights of minorities. What will they take next?

>Our community should put pressure on the federal government to revoke the churches tax exempt status.

We have to get a change to federal law, first. The law currently states that they cannot advocate for a political candidate, but they can advocate for a political cause, such as a ballot question.

I'd love to see the law changed so that "organizing" is added to the activities that are not tax exempt. I think that it's fair to allow church leaders to preach for a vote from the pulpit, but sending out letters, allowing use of church resources, giving parishoners information about how to volunteer for political organizations, having sign up sheets in the back of the church...all that stuff I'd like to see stopped (or taxes levied).

I really hate that the debate continues to center around the M word. For these people, it's an academic exercise; for us, it involves how we form families, raise children, and manage finances/property. It just doesn't *cost* these people anything to get all high and mighty about the "sanctity" of marriage and how gay people can't procreate through intercourse. (Soooo, what?!) They just feel more secure in trying to prove they're right. What about their moral obligation to advocate for the welfare of children who are being raised by gay people? How about their moral obligation to "do unto others"? Response: "Marriage is one man, one woman." Geez! It's so brain dead.

seems we are now beyond time to change the way we do business - no more tax exempt status for churches, organizations affilitated with any church of faith and no more federal, state or local tax money for any faith based organization regardless of how helpful and above board they are. Where I live those performing a marriage ceremony have to be authorized to do so by the state and certified by the county clerk looks a lot like a civil matter. I'll get off my soapbox now

Hit them where is hurts, money!

Our community should put pressure on the federal government to revoke the churches tax exempt status. Those churches that preach politics have broken the law they know it, we know it and the government knows it. And nothing has done to address this. Totally unacceptable.

This should be part of our strategy to move us further toward our goal of equality.

Karen, this is excellent! Why do they choose the gay marriage issue? Maybe because it's easy and cost free. Going after the other issues you mentioned requires the church to actually DO SOMETHING, i.e., provide shelter, spend money, etc. God forbid. It's easy just to spew some popular crap from the pulpit.
