Louisiana gov. drops gay anti-discrimination order

(Baton Rouge, Louisiana) Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) is dropping an executive order prohibiting employment discrimination against gay and lesbian state workers that was put in place in 2004 by his Democratic predecessor.
Jindal said Wednesday that when the order expires Friday he will not renew it.“The reason for allowing the order to lapse is that I don’t think it is necessary to create additional special categories or special rights,” Jindal told The New Orleans Advocate newspaper.
“We are firmly and strongly committed to fair treatment of all of our people and certainly don’t condone discrimination in any form,” Jindal said.
The executive order, signed by then-Gov. Kathleen Blanco, bars state agencies and contractors from various sorts of harassment and discrimination by race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin political affiliation or disabilities. It was modeled after a similar anti-discrimination order issued in 1992 by then-Gov. Edwin Edwards.
The governor said that federal law already bans discrimination. But neither federal nor Louisiana state law bars discrimination against LGBTs in employment.
That Jindal is allowing the order to expire is no surprise. He has fought it since its inception.
When Blanco announced in 2005 she was preparing the order, Jindal, then a member of Congress, joined with Sen. James David Cain and two Republican members of the Legislature to fight the measure.
It nevertheless went into effect the following year.
Jindal was widely been seen as a potential Vice Presidential running mate for John McCain.

LGBT are disposable citizens to Republicans in order to advance EVANGELICAL CHRISTIAN approval.
Republicans HAVE NO MORALS! - if they did, they wouldn’t blatantly LIE as this asshole Governor is doing. That’s right LogCabiners - keep supporting a party that supports these kinds of people. (Some people, you give them a shovel and they bury themselves!)
Jindal also wants Creationism taught in the public schools here. Focus on the Family is actually running the state. So it is no surprise that he is revoking what little protection glbtq citizens have in Louisiana.
Methinks that Jindal is a bigoted little prig who is not only delusional on the age of the planet (moron thinks it is 6k years old) but also delusional regarding his future political future.
It figures. Another Republican bigot! Wake up gay America! We pay taxes to fund state government here in the U.S. Therefore, I am entitled to take any job in state government without the worry of being fired for just being gay. The governor is entitled to his opinion but as a taxpayer, that does not mean LGBT employees should be treated any differently.
No surprise from the Republican Party of Hate, or Christian right…..whatever they call themselves.
You are really kidding me. I can’t believe this! I moved back home to Louisiana when then Gov. Roemer was worried about the “brain drain” happening in Louisiana in the late 80’s. I moved away again a couple years ago, but never will I go back now.
What a dunce.
What is this stupidhead smoking? Federal laws are already in place? Uhm, nooooo, not covering LGBT citizens. What a flipping hypocrite! Jindal says that they do not condone any discrimination, yetis removing protections out of the lawbooks that would make sure there is legal ramifications when, not if, but when it does occur. Yet again, we here the conservative slogan “special rights.” Special rights my butt.
He isn’t smoking anything - HE knows and WE know he is lying - it’s as simple as that! He is just using those catch-phrases because the anti-gay morons in that state love to rationalize their discrimination cloaked in those ridiculous and moronic statements.
As a resident of the illiterate, backward southern region of the US (Florida– w/our closeted gay bigot “progressive” GOP governor) all I can say is that this is a region dominated by uneducated citizens and the republiscum party… a dangerous mixture. I cannot WAIT ’til my partner and I get the @#@$%!! out of this region. I will be so happy to move to the northeast or any other progressive, educated region of the US.
The reality is that this man was elected into office by the voting public, and he is confident enough to take this move on behalf of his constituency, so who is ultimately responsible?
This is just one more reason for GLBT people and their allies in other states to boycott New Orleans and Louisiana. Why spend our tourist dollars in a state that hates us when there are so many other beautiful and supportive places to visit?
Guess he couldnt do an exorcisim to get rid of us so lowers himself to this. Hope McLoser does pick this fool fo Veep - would love to see him lose badly.
Greg in Tally: Move here to New York! Our governor is actively campaigning for marriage equality, and it will pass in the next few years.
