I was in my teens when Milk implored gays to come out of the closet. His plea was heard across the nation, he was very brave in context to his time.

This is great news. Although I live in San Francisco, I grew up not far from where Milk did (I grew up in northeast Queens; I believe he came from the "Five Towns" area, east of JFK airport). I graduated high school a number of years after Milk...in 1968 to be precise. When I was a young gay man living in Queens, which included the time period when Harvey Milk ran for office and then was murdered, there were virtually no LGBT resources outside of Manhattan. Nor would I even have conceived of walking hand-in-hand with a boyfriend outside of the West Village, even in the late 70's. Things have changed so much since I was young, in terms of acceptance and of resources for LGBT youth, and I could not be happier to hear it.
