LGBT group critical of gay Republican endorsement of McCain

(Minneapolis, Minnesota) The nation’s largest LGBT civil rights organization is taking Log Cabin Republicans to task for endorsing John McCain and Sarah Palin.
“John McCain claims to be a maverick who breaks with his party, but on matters of LGBT equality, he’s shown that he’s anything but,” said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese.“He actively campaigned for a constitutional amendment that would have banned marriage and domestic partnerships for same-sex couples in his home state of Arizona. He went so far as to appear in television commercials for that campaign, is now supporting an amendment to strip marriage equality from California couples and has said that he would vote for a federal marriage amendment if laws already banning marriage equality were to be struck down by federal courts,” he said.
HRC is equally concerned about the Log Cabin endorsement of Vice Presidential candidate Palin:
“Sarah Palin has also supported bans on marriage and even domestic partner benefits in Alaska. The Republican Party, McCain and Palin’s party, has declared in its platform that they want to pass the federal marriage amendment. Their party’s platform also calls gay and lesbian Americans unfit for military service, supports policies that would allow faith-based organizations to deny us jobs and services using federal dollars, and attacks judges who acknowledge our equality under the law. The Human Rights Campaign endorses mavericks on both sides of the aisle— neither John McCain nor Sarah Palin is among them,” said Solmonese.
Log Cabin’s endorsement of the McCain/Palin ticket was not unexpected. The gay GOP group made its announcement Tuesday following a 12-2 vote of its national board of directors.
“On the most important issue that LGBT Americans faced in the last decade—the federal marriage amendment—Sen. John McCain stood with us. Now we stand with him,” said Log Cabin Republicans President Patrick Sammon.
“Sen. McCain showed courage by bucking his own party’s leadership and the president – twice voting against the amendment. He gave an impassioned speech on the Senate floor, calling the amendment ‘antithetical in every way to the core philosophy of Republicans.’ He paid a political price for his vote,” said Sammon.
Log Cabin noted, however, that it does have some disagreements with McCain on LGBT issues.
“We have honest disagreements with Sen. McCain on a number of gay rights issues. Log Cabin will continue our conversation with him and other Republican leaders about issues affecting gay and lesbian Americans. We will speak out when there’s disagreement—either during the upcoming campaign or when John McCain is President,” said Sammon.
Log Cabin Republicans endorsed then-Governor George W. Bush in 2000, but declined to endorse President Bush in 2004—largely over the president’s push for a federal anti-gay marriage constitutional amendment and his decision to use gay people as a wedge issue in winning re-election.

Log Cabin Republican(s): Noun: one who is delusional enough to believe that voting for the same party expecting different results (see moron), to have blinders on, or to be blinded by greed, averous, money (see rich white queers), having no clue, believing that conservatives are in any way pro-equality (see ENDA, Gay Marriage). Having little or no grasp of the obvious; being of a particular bent for self denial (see DUH).
Who a group wants to endorse is decided by members of that group. If you aren’t a Log Cabin Republican, then shut up. (No, I am not one either.)
JJS, touchy are we? They may indeed endorse whom they wish and yes, I am not a Log Cabin Republican…BUT, if you think I should, as you so eloquently put it, shut up, well that’s not going to happen. BTW, the shut up comment, very Bill O’Reilly of you.
LCR. Jews in Nazi uniform. Nuff said.
Crazy! It’s like “Please like us. We will vote for you, even though you hate us and want us to crawl under a rock.” If there ever is any change in the Republican party regarding gay rights, it will only be because they followed the Democrats lead.
I think any LGBT person who does , or is a member of any organization, that supports and /or endorses a person, or persons, or group of people who deny LGBT people their Human, Civil, and/or Constitutional Rights has sadomasochistic tendencies and apparently is a sadly mentally impaired!
“Log Cabin Republicans” – anyone for “Jews for Hitler”? or “Blacks for the KKK”? – they all add up to the same thing. Log Cabin Republicans are a disgrace to the GLBT community. They are self-loathing homosexuals who should be ashamed of themselves.
I think any LGBT person who personaly does , or is, a member of any organization, that supports and /or endorses a person, or persons, or group of people that deny LGBT people their Human, Civil, and/or Constitutional Rights has sadomasochistic tendencies and apparently is a sadly mentally impaired!
It’s about money. Duh. The rich gay Republicans can’t fathom the perception of being taxed. But they don’t don’t realize that the Republican state will one day seize their belongings as the German state did to the Jews.
LBGT Democrats: the illusion is all yours. Presidential elections have never been about gay rights ever since gay Dems allowed Bill Clinton to get away with giving the gay community DADT and DOMA. If you hold your gay-friendly Democrat party’s feet to fire when it comes to gay rights legislation for once, maybe, just maybe, the rest of us will listen to you. As far as I’m concerned, GayDems are no better than flies hanging around dung.
The only thing Log Cabiners care about first and foremost are the economy affecting their wealth, personal possessions, and low on their agenda, universal health care which most do not support and of course the very bottom rung on the ladder is marriage equality. I’m afraid the last item is going to be yet another wedge issue in McCain’s campaign if Palin has anything to do with it. Log Cabin gays….hmmm, what an oxymoron!
Chris S. you should be ashamed of yourself as you sound exactly like those you preach against. I see nothing in the LGBT community that is encouraging as this community is really no different than the right wing religious goons and the left wing haters of America. The discusting acts at the republican convention and the hate promoted against Mrs. Palin has pushed me to support the Log Cabin Republicans. The hate being promoted on 365 by the LGBT community has done nothing but give me the belief that the LGBT community desrves nothing.
Stop and look at yourselves, you sound exactly like those you speak of. I see very little love and respect in the LGBT community. Every one of you are running with the crap being promoted by the very left wing trash in America. You are not doing any faviors for the LGBT community but only hurting every evert to gain equal rights. It is time for you people to grow up and stop acting like a bunch of 9th graders.
Actually, Patrick Sammon believes as do Log Cabiners that they can bring about change within their party by constant discussion. Now how naive can they be? If their party is purported to be an inclusive party, then why aren’t they supporting full civil rights for LGBT people? They have never said anything positive about us so why would anyone in their right mind continue supporting them. You can bet that many in the Log Cabin group are closet gays, some even “wannabe” straights. Its quite apparent that none of them have been subjected to discrimination since they’re so good at hiding who they are, and….they do not give a damn about the rest of us. Now how sick is that?
“dgreatone” – your response is mere self-deception. Maybe they can get you to turn on the ovens.
You guys ought to listen to yourselves once in awhile. You talk like assholes.
