Lesbian waits for Presbyterian court ruling

(San Francisco, California) A woman who has been twice denied ordination in the Presbyterian Church is eagerly awaiting a ruling by a church court that could not only affect her but other gays and lesbians in the denomination.
Lisa Larges has been fighting for two decades to become the first openly lesbian minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA).Although there is ban on gay and lesbian ordination, a change in the church’s national policy allows individual exceptions if a candidate submits a statement of conscience against the prohibition.
Larges was the first to submit a statement of conscience and was approved to move forward in the ordination process. Friday a trial was held in a church court and a decision is pending on whether her ordination will move forward or be appealed to the General Assembly Permanent Judicial Commission of the Presbyterian Church, the highest church court.
Last June, the national church’s policy setting group, the General Assembly, voted to remove restrictive language prohibiting gays and lesbian ordination from the church Constitution. The 173 Presbyteries are currently voting on this change, which needs a simple majority for ratification.
“This struggle will continue and inevitably end in gays and lesbians freely and openly serving our church as ordained officers, including as pastors and ministers,” Larges said in a statement.
“It is clear to me that as long as the Presbyterian church practices faith based discrimination, it will be fighting a losing battle, because it’s already clear that Biblical scholarship, theological perspectives and cultural changes are moving our church inevitably toward inclusion.
The Presbyterian Church (USA) has 2.3 million members and is the largest Presbyterian denomination in the country.

Folks, these are the spiritual descendants of the PILGRIMS and the PURITANS.
While both the UCC (former Congregationalists) and PCUSA (mainline Presbyterian) have liberalized somewhat (the UCC more than the Presbyterians), there are still rock-ribbed homophobes lurking about.
Why would one WANT to minister in a homophobic parish or denomination?
Yes, yes, I’ve heard the “change from the inside” argument … from Roman Catholics, from Mormons, from Baptists, etc. … most of them are going to spend their lives very unhappily on the outside looking in.
It’s time for gay people to either GET OVER religion or stage a takeover of the levers of church government and expel the HOMOPHOBES … and / or inclusify MCC so those of us who don’t come from a US Deep South Evangelical / Holy Roller background will feel comfortable.
I’m ABOUT to lose patience with the Arch-Weasel of Canterbury in my own church, and his continued tolerance of “archbishop” Akinola’s call for GLBTQAI genocide, despite the US Episcopal Church’s courageous stand.
I still believe in the teachings of Jesus … the “Church,” not so much …
