A family is a family and for the Government to split this family up or any others like them is deplorable. I know I would have a hard time explaining to my sons or daughters that my spouse or there other father had to leave because there countries government did'nt recognise his/her right to be with them.

Some EVIL people here have suggest that Ms. Tan status is not mentioned here. She has stated that her asylum case was denied recently therefore she has fallen out of status...however, if Immigration laws weren's shamefully discriminatory; her partner would have been able to sponsor her stay, therefore no need for assylum petition. Furthermore, she has TWO children who are American Citizens, for which the so-called releigious people that support hatred and discrimination don't give a damn.

I'm not very familiar with immigrant/citizen laws, but I feel this story, while heartbreaking, is not giving the whole picture.
Of the 23 years this couple was together, how much of it was here in the US. It sounds as if it was quite a long time. Why has she not petitioned for citizenship via a non-marriage-sponsered basis? I have a single friend who emmigrated here from Serbia some years back and he earned his citizenship by studying our laws and history and passing the citizenship examination (much harder than a GED or even a diploma from most public schools, I've been told!).

Is there some reason this option is closed to her? Or is this story avoiding that point to tug harder at our heartstrings?

[Note: I am NOT supporting breaking up a happy family in any way. Nor am I against GLBT rights... I would very much like to marry my partner, but she refuses until it would be equal in law]

That is why Californians need to be ashamed of not pasting prop 8. These so called holy-rollers have destroyed a couple that are stable and have as much right to raise a family as the red-necks that should not be allowed to breed period much less have ten or eighteen kids (think that mornon that has 14 kids)

I'm Cdn, my partner is American. We met in US and lived there together for 4 years but eventually moved to Cda where we are married and she is a Canadian citizen. We still miss the US but the thought of crossing the border and losing our rights, scares us to death...we're even afraid to vacation in most parts of the US because of the issues with medical decision making and visitation in case of car accident/illness. I really feel for this family - maybe making this a really public story in the mainstream press would delay deportment for a while to buy some time for the law to change.

This one of the reason we need to pass the Uniting American Families act. It is currently in committee in both the house and the Senate. It would allow for American people to sponsor their partners. Please support us and write your congressman to be a cosponsor on this bill. We need to act up and fight for our right to love who we chose!

Michael H....UK gay nationals are allowed to bring in their foreign partners who are given the right to reside and work. This has been UK law long before civil partnerships were introduced in 2004. Bi-national immigration legislation is still the law in the UK. We in the U.S. are light-years behind the rest of the more progressive western democracies. So much for being number 1, NOT.

Tom, she's being deported because she's an illegal. It's implied in the article. This would've been a different story if she were straight.

Please write the Office of Public Liaison TODAY. The artical did not say why she is being deported after all this time but 23 years is a long time to prove she deserves citizenship.
