La Toya Jackson scene removed from `Bruno’ movie
06.29.2009 5:00pm EDT
(Los Angeles) The filmmakers behind “Bruno” have decided to delete a scene involving La Toya Jackson following her brother’s death.
Universal Pictures, which is releasing the comedy, said the decision came “out of respect for the Jackson family.”The moment was first cut out of the movie’s Los Angeles premiere Thursday night, which took place just hours after the Michael Jackson’s death at age 50.
“Bruno,” starring British comic Sacha Baron Cohen as a flamboyantly gay Austrian fashion correspondent, is set to come out July 10 and is the follow-up to his 2006 smash “Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.” La Toya Jackson had been featured in an absurd interview with Bruno in which she sits on a Mexican man’s back and eats sushi off a second, naked Mexican man.
The moment is classic Baron Cohen, the kind in which he places some unsuspecting person in a weirdly deadpan situation and waits for the humiliation – and the humor – to follow. He also tries to interview Paula Abdul in this setting but she quickly feels uncomfortable and leaves. (The joke’s on the audience, too, because we don’t know which scenes are real and spontaneous and which feature players who are in on the gag.)
Jackson arrives at a contemporary L.A. home under the guise of being interviewed by Bruno, a character Baron Cohen introduced alongside Borat on his sketch comedy program “Da Ali G Show.” Because there’s no furniture in the house, Bruno asks Jackson to sit on the back of a Mexican laborer, who’s on his hands and knees functioning as a chair. Another man serves as a table with pieces of sushi spread across his naked body.
Jackson hangs out awhile and politely banters with Bruno, who asks whether she will introduce him to her brother, Michael. She tries to deflect his persistent requests but relents when he asks to see her cell phone – then he finds what is supposedly Michael Jackson’s number and reads it to his assistant in German.

I find it hard to believe that some of the “victims” that post comments on here have managed to never develop a sense of humor about themselves. That must make being you twice as hard. You might be missing the point if you think the movie is a 2-hour gay joke. In fact, you would probably be a perfect candidate to star in one of these movies. If we take everything so seriously, we’ll never be taken seriously ourselves. There is a difference between malicious behavior and humor. If we can’t see the difference and laugh at ourselves, then the terrorists have already won.
God D*%M it,Michael! It’s just like you to
steal my thunder and get me kicked out of the movie that was going to make me a STAR!
I think Ali G, Borat and Bruno are all hilarious, in sketch format. They don’t seem to make good feature length movies though. Borat sort of grows on you, but “Ali G in Da House” *facepalm*
Don’t make the mistake that most people make and judge a movie by the previews. Make your decision after you see it. We mock many people for slamming movies like “Outrage” never to have seen it, or the latest Michael Moore, “documentary”. Bruno is a fun movie that is obviously over the top and it isn’t Bruno or his characters that is what is supposed to be funny, it is the people’s real reaction to them.
Unfortunately S.B. Cohen’s appeal is to adolescent straight homophobic boys. His last movie had two jokes that could be laughed at, the rest of the movie was laughable.
So let me get this “straight”. The movie BRUNO wastes 2 hours laughing at the expense of Gay people but Cohen was concerned about upsetting people with a bit about Michal Jackson’s sister? What a hypocrit. Sacha Baron Cohen, you are the joke!
If you don’t like it, don’t watch it. Sasha sheds like on issues through his ridiculous-ness. He makes complete mockeries of “normal” people and by that he is pushing an agenda.
MJ jokes are still hilarious and will always be. MJ was a human male, he can be laughed at. Most men deserve to be.
…and heaven forbid that anyone insult Miss Jackson’s delicate sensibilities!
This would have actually been very funny, had Michael not died. Michael was alive at filming, so it would be in bad taste NOW after-the-fact.
Also, I could care less about Prop-8. My Prop-8 happened in 2004. But I didn’t realize that there was enough ignorant white trash in CA as in KY to remake laws.
There needs to be amendment to national constitution reaffirming separation of church/state.
I don’t know Sacha Baron Cohen personally, but I do know he’s pretty left-wing politically and even though he was raised an Orthodox Jew he’s not particularly religious.
It would be inconsistent with his style for him to support Proposition 8 personally. If he were to support it, it would be as one of his characters and in a totally mocking, satirical way. The example of Bruno going to a Proposition 8 rally is his comedy style.
Island Boy,
Thanks for correcting me on this one.
I just watched a video clip of SBC crashing a pro-prop H8 rally as Bruno.
At first I didn’t realize it was SB Cohen
because when he was starring in “Borat,” he had black hair and a big black moustache and here in the Bruno video clip he has long, light colored brown hair and was completely clean-shaven.
I just read that he was chased and had to be wisked away in a van. I don’t have working computer speakers at this time(and am looking into replacing those speakers at Target or Best Buy) so I had to rely solely on what I could see in the clip and read a little later. The beginning of the video clip was very blurry as the camera was being moved around much too fast until it was then held steadily.
So, I am corrected on this one.
I don’t care what he did with regard to Prop 8 – he’s simply not funny. Screw cutting this scene – they should do the world a favor and burn the whole shitting movie.
Island Boy,
Let my check that out again.
I thought I read that he did what I said. Let me google for a minute.
Morgan, where and how did Cohen publicly promoted Prop 8? Articles online tell me he crashed a Yes for Prop 8 rally instead.
I dont spend any time or money on this obvious idiot cohen..
his crap bores me.
I don’t care how funny Sacha Baron Cohen is. He is not so funy or entertaining after after he publicly promoted Prop H8.
