Knoxville restores GLBT web access to schools

(Knoxville, Tenn.) The superintendent of the Knox County schools says a glitch has been fixed, allowing access to educational Web sites on gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender issues.

Superintendent Jim McIntyre told the county school board on Wednesday the school system was working on the matter before a lawsuit was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union against the Knox County and Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County school systems for denying access.

The Knoxville News Sentinel quoted McIntyre saying blocking the sites was not in compliance with Knox County’s policy and the system worked with Internet service provider ENA to allow access to the sites from school computers.

    • Does anyone know if the other school districts involved in the suit have responded?

    • Glitch? Just like the Amazon.com one? How believable… NOT!

    • “A glitch.” I love it.

Funny how the glitches never block out our opponents’ web sites. ;-)

    • Being a lesbian living in Knoxville and often times finding it quite difficult living under the bible belt, I feel that this is a real step forward for all gays and lesbians everywhere.

    • For those who have snarky comments, I offer this (and I’m a native Tennessean). The problem is being fixed. California may not block, but I suspect that a look around the state could bring up some surprises. Oh no, not possible–California is too liberal to do something as petty as block gay content…like a 12-year-old girl doing a report on Harvey Milk, or a high school denied permission to stage their production of “Rent.”

    • What with all the glitches. First Amazon, now this? Please these are only very lame excuses to block freedom of speech, and promote ant-GLBT propaganda. So good victory ACLU! Keep up the good work!!!

    • It’s interesting that these glitches and technical errors only ever seem to block gay related issues and never straight related issues.

    • Glitch huh? Sure and the sky is purple. Well, the ACLU kicked some ass again. Glad to see my recent $15 donation to them is being used.

    • Gotta love those ‘Glitches’. Personally I think some little person decided the ‘glitch’ was a good idea and thought that it was their decission to make.

    • I know the Superintendent personally from his time as COO of the Boston Public Schools and he would not support blocking LGBT sites. Whether someone else made that decision is another thing, but Jim certainly would not have.

    • Oh those pesky glitches.

    • Yay! What the story doesn’t report is that this improves access for those in other Tennessee towns and cities as well, as the nannyware was a common-share system among many other systems as well.

    • A glitch. Indeed.

    • Excellent – yet another “error” resolved. This is very positive.
