Dan:

Give me a break! I am not the least intolerant, I grew up with these people, in Florida, did you see the poll results on Amendment 2? 69% against, 31% for (gay marriage)yet are you aware this man (flaguy954)is describing the rapture? Do you know what that means?

Holy war, where only the righteous go to heaven!

I am aware not all Baptists are bad peole, I happen to know and like more than one. There are even some Baptists that do not hate gay people. But not many, it is what they are taught, by their church.

However, what flaguy954 references in his post is religious stupidity at its' worst, and I don't excuse it.

If he is gay, I certainly pity him, to be so conflicted, to believe such garbage, and to be gay, to live with a dual personality must be very difficult, if not impossible. For that, he has my sympathy.

I do not sympathize with any religion, nor will I, as you, play apologist for the polls you reference. I live in California, our polls, the same Pew polls you reference, told us we would win the fight over Proposition 8. We didn't.

You may call me intolerant, I prefer to believe myself a pragmatist. I am not coddling ridiculous insanity, regardless of whether it is wrapped in "religion".

You may do so if you like, your patronizing "tolerance" will leave you without basic rights but I assure you, it will not be a winning strategy.

If you are willing to wait until the 18-29 group grow up and vote for "civil unions or marriage" then do so.

I would prefer to finish this in the next 7-8 years.

Play the role of apologist, it will get you nowhere. I guarantee it.

Mr. Burrows, I'm a little taken aback by the intolerance in your post. While I don't share FlaGuy954's religious views, he's still a human being deserving of respect, just as we are. There's no reason to assert that he's insane or believes that God isn't love solely because of his religious affiliation.

Did you know that 58% of evangelical Christians between the ages of 18 and 29 support either civil unions or marriage equality? That was the result of a recent Pew center poll. I just think that people are all individuals and shouldn't be dismissed on the basis of a demographic characteristic, whether it's religious affiliation, race, gender, gender identity, or sexual orientation.

"Carter lost his bid for re-election because he was constantly torn between doing what is right and what his religion told him to do; it wasn’t indecision, it was a lack of courage."

That is a crock!!

Carter did not lose his re-election because of any religious issue or being torn at doing 'what is right.'

What exactly did he do or not do that you would consider right?

Good grief.

He lost because he wasn't able to get the hostages in Iran out before the election. And that made him look weak. Also, Reagan carried on about him having a 69 billion dollar deficit. LOL.. That paled to the 548 billion deficit Reagan wracked up.

It was unfortunate b/c he was one of the better presidents of the 20th century.

And I admire him for his criticisms of Israel. It takes cajones in the political climate that exists in this country to state it like it truly is.

I consider him one of the most honorable leaders our country has ever had.

And his wife was one of the classiest first ladies of all time.

When all these rabid, hystrionic right wingers find out that those of us who live an "alternative life style" have more discretionary income than their usual flocks, are we gonna see some changes then! My take, of course. Onward!

RE:Flaguy954 - Are you for real? Usher in the millenium for when Christ returns?
LMAO. You wonder why the rest of the country thinks you're insane? It's because you are insane.

The god you have been brainwashed to believe is a judgemental and vengeful god, does not exist.

I hate to be the one to break it to you, but god is love. I think you missed that message.

In the name of god, history is littered with the corpses of the "unbelievers" and heretics, we call them scientists, astronomers, and intellectuals, evangelical churches are a dark ages construction, and we wish them the fate they wish others, after all, you reap what you sow!

Are you gay? It must be very difficult to adhere to an evangelical philosophy, and to like yourself as gay at the same time. I truly feel sorry for you.

I'm not surprised you live in Florida, I used to live there, the worst religions I ever saw were the baptists, especially the evangelical holy-rollers.

So sad for you!

And there are those of us who disagree with Carter on his criticism of Israel. We Evangelical Baptists believe God has kept his covenant with Israel and that the Temple must be rebuilt in Jerusalem on the Temple Mount to usher in the New Millenium when Christ returns!

Carter was the only open and honest man to be president in the 20th century. That was his undoing. Thank G-d me was and continues to be true to his convictions--which includes his belief in the inclusiveness of his religion.

Most people believe in some sort of religion. I can't change that. But I can remind religious people that, just as I have no right to re-order their beliefs, so they have no right to impose theirs on me. Jimmy Carter's faith is far removed from today's Southern Baptists. You don't hear him speak of excluding people.

As for Carter's loss of the Presidency, I doubt anyone could've made it through that time without looking awkward. There were too many Americans looking to be distracted from the memories of Watergate and Vietnam, and Carter wasn't going to facilitate that distraction as well as a former California governor--who quite probably was in early-stage Alzheimer's in his second term. I'll take flawed courage over dementia, thanks.
