Is Israel ready for a gay PM?

From the Advocate:

“A poll published by the Hebrew-language daily Yediot Aharonot on Friday showed that nearly half of Israelis surveyed are ready for a gay prime minister, reports The Jerusalem Post .

Among respondents, 25% said they were certain they were ready for a gay prime minters, and 19% said they thought they were ready. Some 13% said they were unsure, while 7% said they were not ready, and 11% did not answer.

The findings come less than one month after the shooting that killed two at a Tel Aviv gay youth center, prompting dialogue about tolerance for Israeli LGBT people as well as threats against the community from religious conservatives.”

    • This has been amusing..
We can agree on one thing, Credit should be given when credit is due. However, personally, i find it difficult to give credit to anyone who is supporting human rights and taking them away from other humans at the same time.Respectively, I never said Israel is evil but its actions are still far from being considered angelic.

    • “You can comment all you want but you can also keep missing the point.”

I didn’t miss the point. The point is that you think that anyone who says something positive about Israel is evil, even if the vast majority of their thoughts are negative. I got that point in your first post.

It is, however, incredibly ignorant to assume that just because there are a small number of positive things about Israel and learned people are willing to acknowledge those few things, that those same people are OK with the Israeli occupation of the Palestinians.

I can’t speak for Drewski, but I certainly don’t feel that way. I’m far more sympathetic to the Palestinians than I am to the average Israeli; and the only Israelis that I have sympathy for at all are the ones who live under the constant threat rocket fire.

    • Ger over yourselves, these comments have nothing to do with you but everything to do with article’s like this glorifying a country because its somewhat on the verge of being gay friendly and “tolerant” of diversity when in fact peace and tolerance are contradicted every day by this country’s actions towards another race of people. But as long as the media paints you a “pretty picture” you will buy it. The truth is that Neither side is innocent or perfect so those that are pretending to be are living in ignorance. All humans, regardless of Sexual orientation deserve to be treated with respect, its not enough of a recovery act for a country to say its “gay friendly” to be accepted as a tolerant country in this modern age. “Actions speak louder than words” You can comment all you want but you can also keep missing the point.

    • @00HaveAniceDay00–You’re not only presumptive, but you show a lot of impetuous ignorance. Nowhere do my words (or Kari’s, or anyone else’s) minimize the value of anyone else’s life. You didn’t like what Kari said. Interestingly, you targeted my comments for a response which is barely more than word salad in its regurgitated cliches. Maybe that’s because–whatever Kari’s comments–I called you out for your irresponsibility. Instead of staying on point, you’ve sought to use this thread as a bootstrap opportunity. You have nothing of substance to contribute to the thread. It amounts to lighting a paper bag of poo on somebody’s front porch, with a comparable level of intellectual effort. Either get a ride to soccer practice and leave the adults alone, or show that you can comment on either the original thread or subsequent posts without being needlessly and willfully unproductive and antagonistic.

    • how can a country preach tolerance to gays and justify destruction and killing of other people homes, straights, gays , Muslims,Christian ,INNOCENT Palestinian people. Get your History correct before posting a comment and defending a cause which you may not be familiar with.

    • @00HaveAniceDay00–get off the box. I’m not fighting Kari’s corner, but I’m not in the mood to see the ten-millionth rehash of I’m The World’s Biggest Martyr. If you can name ONE Arab country where gays have recognized civil rights, then please start from that point. The closest you’ll get is Lebanon, and don’t think of trying to drag out Dubai because there are no civil rights there. If your concern was the status of Palestinian gays, you would have the good sense not to start sniping at Kari, because nowhere in Kari’s posts have I seen any justification of Shas or any of the other right-wing parties. Cheap shots like yours give support to idiocy like Hamas launching rockets at Ashkelon (like Mexican cartels starting terror attacks in Otay Mesa), which only leads to stupid responses like Bibi Netanyahu’s second tour as PM and his utterly boneheaded grandstanding with the US (a.k.a. Israel’s godfather). If you care about Palestinian gays, talk about real people and real circumstances, and don’t use them to advance a sullen and ill-considered political point. All that gesture achieves is trivializing a real conflict to a point that all feelings are too bruised for people to be brave enough to do the right thing.

    • I just acknowledged a reality that gay Palestinians are almost all either in the closet or living in Israel with (frequently Jewish) lovers because it’s the only way they won’t be killed by Hamas and the other militias.

I didn’t say home demolitions are OK, did I?

  • 00HaveAniceDay00 Said: August 24th, 2009 at 5:04 pm
    • oh ok..so it is ok to bulldoze the closeted gay’s and the heterosexual Palestinians’ homes..its a contradiction to preach tolerance and contradict that tolerance with actions…there needs to be a new approach to Peace In the Middle East. Neither side is innocent or perfect so those that are pretending to be are living in ignorance.

  • Kari Said: August 24th, 2009 at 3:38 pm
    • 00HaveAniceDay00: Gay Palestinians don’t have homes to bulldoze. Those that are out typically live in Israel because if they stay in the Palestinian territories Hamas will either execute them or force them to commit a suicide attack.

  • 00HaveAniceDay00 Said: August 24th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
    • hmm..i wonder if a gay PM for Israel will stop buldozing the homes of gay Palestinians..

  • Kari Said: August 24th, 2009 at 3:26 pm
    • The original article makes me laugh. Apparently both the National Union and Meretz think they will win whenever the next election ends up being.

It’s humorous, and perhaps a little sad, when in truth their chances of actually winning an election are about as high as Balad winning.

    • soci

You never know until you actually elect any PM how things will turn until she or he is in office and then have to show Israel, the Arab Middle East, Iran, Europe, and the rest of the world that they can effectively lead Israel and effectively represent Israel’s interests.

Just elect the person and like him or her for the job done. Not for the sexual orientation.
